knocking noise when air is on

I have an 02 with 1900 miles. When I turned the air on I heard a loud knocking sound. When i turned it off it went away. What could it be????

i had the same problem... i thnk you got like pebbles or lil debri in your ac... i noticed after driving through a construciton zone a a truck slammed me with dirt on the higway.. after a coupe minutes i haerd it.. turn the ac on and off to see if it came from there.. what i did was turn it on full blast till it went away..

Dealer replaced my brother's a/c compressor. It was the engagement's bearing, according tech boy.

Compresor out of oil or something like that. They should replace the A/C Compressor. It's going to get louder pretty soon.

Same problem here. The first time I had this problem was in my 2.sl0w. VW techs said it was a bad compressor, when they checked it they said the oil level was low, I made them fill it up and the sound was gone. Now I have it in my 1.8T. I'm going to try the same.
