I was tracking down a paper-like noise when on the throttle and looked under the passenger seat. Found a bunch of stickers with chair model number, etc on them. Some of the stickers were poorly stuck on, with their corners hanging off that I think are the culprit for the sound (sounds like thin paper vibrating).

Anyways, saw these vents (?) under there and was curious what they're for. Part of the HVAC system? Anyone know? [emoji854]

I can't say with 100% certainty, but in most cars that is how the heat gets to the rear seats

So not through the vents on the back of the center console? Or do they work to deliver heat together?

This is my first vw, which is why I am not 100% sure, but most people want heat on the feet, and those vents under the seat fit the bill. As for the center console ones, I honestly haven't checked. It might work in conjunction with the under seat ones, or the console vents may be for air conditioning. Now I am curious and want to find out exactly what the console ones do!

Geez, not to be sarcastic, but this is a great example of how out of touch people are regarding logic and intuition. How hard could it be to draw a line between the vent and the climate control system. Let's just hope this curiosity doesn't lead anyone to actually look under the hood.

And this is an enthusiast forum ! Incredible.
BTW I would report the defective paper to JD Powers.

Lol which is why I made the initial guess of it being part of the HVAC system. Didn't have anything like that in my previous car, so it just fueled some mild curiosity that's all. No need to attack my logic [emoji4]

Are you sure you didn't have rear vents in your previous car? I am asking that seriously, because I have never had a car that did not have them (13 Toyotas, 2 Nissans, and the new GTI). While I would imagine cars like the original VW Bug might not have them, I am not sure where else you wouldn't see them, at least on a car that has a back seat.

Last car I had where I was able to check under the seats while cleaning was a first generation Nissan Frontier. Didn't notice it on them but maybe that's because it was a pickup truck?

Regardless, glad we got a mix of actually helpful and some great comical responses here :p

yes even the original type1 beetle had a similar concept.. It was integrated into the channels on either side of the pan and these channels also doubled as support/rigidity structures.

the more you know.
