Has anyone done it?

What parts were needed?

So 99 views and no one willing to share some insight wow!

It might just be that you've made a very new and specific question that no one has any experience with. I wouldn't take personal offense to the lack of a response.
I read it also....but have no useful info.

I don't see why not. People put other wheels in pasts, like from the GTI etc...as long as the connection AND SIZE are the same, which they probably are

when you do it, take lots of photos!!!

Considering the airbag is different, it will probable be an expensive mod as you'll have to buy the wheel and bag from the dealer new ($$$). If you're lucky you might be able to find one used online. Not sure if the wheel/airbag from another 2016+ VW will fit on the Passat. The Jettas have the same style wheel (so I've noticed) but not sure if the part numbers are the same for the wheel and bag. (I'm guessing they are).

I would first go to the parts counter at your dealership and ask him/her to pull up part number on the wheel and bag (or search online). Price it out first and see if its even worth it.

I've swapped out wheels on previous cars (Honda and Benz). Most recently on a 2014 Accord EX which didnt come equipped with a leather wrapped steering wheel (Only Sport and EXL models and up had them). Drove me nuts driving around with a rubber wheel, so I found a barely used one on ebay for $80 and did the swap. Took about an hour (disconnected the battery prior doing removal/exchange).

The only thing holding in the steering wheel is a torx bolt. You'll need a breaker bar and it'll pop off. The airbag should be easy as its only held in by 2 screws as well (thats the way it was on my 2014 Accord)

I have to admit, the newer style wheel is alitter nicer than the old "T" styled wheel.

Make sure to report back.

Above is pictures of the steering wheel installed on my car.

My friend put this steering wheel on. This is the steering that come on the 2016 Passat. He got all the steering wheel controls to work with some minor calibration. All in all it took him 4 hours. I offered him money, but he refused so I just bought him the 12 piece family meal with 3 large sides and tortillas from EL POLLO LOCO.

I thought I might of needed to change the steering column. However, once my friend pulled off the old steering wheel he noticed that new flat bottom steering wheel fits just fine without changing the steering column.

I can say with 100% certainty that you don't need to change the steering column if you have a 2014 Passat and you want to retrofit this steering wheel. Therefore, I am pretty sure if you have a 2012,2013, or 2015 Passat that the same will apply as my situation with the 2014 Passat.

Looks awesome! Anyway you might be able to post a more detailed how-to? that steering wheel definitely looks more "modern" than our current one.
I'll ask my friend if he can break it down for me how he installed this steering wheel.

Same as any other wheel swap, honestly.
Takes about 5-10 minutes, usually

For removing OEM:
http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?5656975-DIY-Golf-R-Steering-Wheel-Installation

Then just reinstall the new one in reverse.
(Tighten down the bolt, plug in harnesses, and snap the airbag in)

Not sure about the coding part though

IIRC, the cruise control buttons don't work (since they'd be redundant--Passat has them on the stalk), but I know the CC guys have swapped/upgraded to the MK7 GTI wheel with no issues

You could ask there:

Thank you for the information! Now to call up junkyards asking if they got a rear-ended 2016 passat with the steering wheel still intact!

Does the R-line have paddle shifters? If not, you could probably install a GLI or GTI wheel just as easy.
On the VW site, it shows it does for the R-line

But yeah...finding a MK7 GTI/GLI steering wheel would probably be easier (assuming the harness is compatible)

The picture shows no paddles, but the listing is FOR paddles:

while its a cool mod...the steering wheel....I do not see the necessity to spend that kind of money on this. IMO

The color screen is cool too. If I could get one cheap enough, I would try that mod. Do you need the VAGCOM to set mileage on a new instrument cluster?

Good job Tebow

I know labor was free, but how much did the wheel and airbag set you back?

Part #561-880-201-J-81U AIRBAG $490 that's the discounted online price

It set me back $1,030.00

Ok that's officially a rip off and completely not worth it all...especially if you don't get the use of the cruise control buttons. Just my opinion of course

The NMS Passat wheel from the vr6 w/paddle shifters is only $665. No not flat bottom, but this is a Passat...know what I'm sayin

Color Cluster was bought for $320 and that is the discounted price.

I have my doubts that you can put this new cluster in with VAGCOM because of the immobilizer in it.

I took this color cluster to the dealer. I had them put the cluster in, set mileage, match it to my keys etc.
Dealer charged me $160 and it took them about 2 hours
