OK I just finished doing this properly I think, but I have an issue, the brake lights are always on, they don't drop down to like 50% brightness when the brakes aren't applied. Anyone know why this is happening?
This could be due to the brake switch not making contact with the pedal. So the brake lights will stay on.

if your brake lights were working properly prior to the wiring change then you have done something else. I doubt its the brake light switch unless youve been under the dash messing with the pedals.

I pulled a rear harness from an 86 Jetta. It would have been nice if the car had been CE2 (like my car is). Then there would have been NO splicing whatsoever. A VW terminal tool is my best friend for electrical work.

As it was, soldered and heat shrink the wires that need cut. The remaining wires for the wiper motor, defrost & license plate lights were depinned from my "K" connector at the fusebox. Also had to move some pins around in the connectors to the taillights. I opted to do it like ETKA shows. On the top, outer is turn and inner is reverse. On the lower, outer is brake, middle is tail/park, and inner on the driver side is fog. The 3rd brake light draws power from the terminals on the passenger side taillight (just like Jettas). The lights get their ground the same way Jettas do. There is a ring terminal in the center of the taillights that is bolted to a metal brace under the trunk latch. I tapped and threaded it even using the same bolt that Jettas use. Pretty happy to clean up all the wires that are necessary when using North American tails. Also, remember that Euro bulb trays use single filament bulbs aka 1156 not 1157. ETKA shows that the reverse, turn, brake, and rear fog are all 21W bulbs. The bottom center park light is a 5w aka R5W. I suspect anything more powerful will melt and ruin your pretty new tails.

Good info on the bulbs. Also for anyone who can't find the R5w bulbs at your local store... 5007's work as a replacement/substitute and have almost the same wattage ratings etc.

For anyone that is interested in getting BRAND NEW from the factory connector housings, the part # is 161945247, and they are still available from the dealer. If you want to get new pins to go in them, VW sells them as a wire. One wire has two pins. Cut the wire in half, and you have two pins. Only problem is the wire only comes in yellow. The wire part# is 000979135E

Hope this helps.

The most eassiest way is like this:

Get an extra 12 V accu or something else with 2 wires.

Put the - to the euro bulb housing. Then just put the + to the first pin and see which light goes on. Then you can mark this as the brakelight, normal light, marking light or fog light... You do this for every pin. When you know this its very easy. You can do it the same for the US wiring. Marking light is clear ofcourse. Rear light also. Brake and normal light is easy, just take 1 wire off.

Very easy, very simple, just do it 1 by 1 and you have it rewired in minutes:)

The lights I bought came with a harness but I am having a hard time getting the harness mated to the GTI wiring, a good picture of the connections or a schematic would be great.
If you search and look for Euro Tails, there are several thread with good details and had good images.

I remember there was something odd I did with the brake light wiring.... thinking the brake light wire from the harness went into the space below the hatch, was split with one lead running back to the left tail light and the other running on to the right tail and the 3rd brake light in the rear rain deflector. Remember to beef up the ground for you euro tails. US spec has 1 ground per bulb, Euro specs have 1 ground per fixture.

(something else to consider is to put a weather pack socket at the end of the harness and then run the wires for the lights off the plug. This way you can make a wiring bundle for Euro spec and for US spec and swap back and forth easily.)

Anyone have a P/N for this?
