I picked up my 2021 Passat R-Line 5 weeks ago, and it was in the shop for 4 of those weeks. There is a low “thump…thump…thump” sound in the front, which starts at approximately 20mph and gradually gets more frequent as you increase speed. When you get to speeds ranging from 55-75 mph, the “thump” sound faints in the background, however, a loud humming/vibration sound takes over. It changes pitch depending on the speed, however, at 59, 64, and 73 mph, it is at its loudest.

This vehicle comes with 19” wheels and Giti tires. So far, the dealer has rotated the tires front to back and replaced the left front wheel bearing. The noise is still there. I was told there is nothing more they can do, and it is now in the hands of a VW Regional Case Manager.

Yesterday, I went back to the dealer and test drove a 2022 Passat R-Line with the same wheels and tires. I was hoping the ’22 had a different brand tire on it, but it didn’t. The same noise was present on this vehicle as well.

As a former technician, I can tell you that this noise is not normal. I also just returned my 2018 Passat R-Line, and that vehicle didn’t have this noise.

I don’t know where to go from here, and I am not sure what the dealer or VW corporate is going to do to resolve this issue.
