Is it possible to buy the shorter 02 antennae and screw put it on to my 01 jetta? Would it just screw on or does it require more work?

unless it's a mid model year change the '02 antenna is the same as all of the previous MKIV cars.
If you want a shorter one the honda s2000 antenna is a direct swap.
