My GTI has been running horrid the past couple of weeks. While the car is idling the RPMs jump randomly from 400-1200. And while I'm driving and push in the clutch for more than a couple seconds the car normally stalls. I was told it was the MAF but I replaced that today and it still has the same problem. Really starting to bug me and I'm running out of ideas as to what the problem might be. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated
Check for pre-O2 exhaust leaks and try a throttle body adaptation. I had very similar issues. Car would take forever to start up, when it did, horrible idle, fluctuating RPM, backfires. Turns out my throttle body was bad. The butterfly would work perfectly fine with the ignition on, but when it was started, nothing.
Yes, that is exhaust gas leaking out before the O2 sensor can get a proper reading of the fuel mixture. It tries to correct for whatever reading it's getting and the result is rough running
