Just picked up an 020 and finally got all the gunk off the exterior to read the code, which is 7A.
Other than the tall 5th gear, is it worthwhile hanging on to this one for my '83 Jetta or are there better versions out there?

Just calculate the ratios and see if it works for you. Some people like the close ratio transmission but I think they are worthless because I like driving on the freeway at decent RPM.

Better versions on something only you can decide on.

7A is a wide-ratio 5-speed 020 with enough clearance to run 100mm CVs (earlier FN ratio could only fit 90mm). They were mostly from 1.7L cars during the gas crunch. They're great if you're making modern power levels and want to reduce rpm on the highway. The one drawback is they usually have riveted diff to ring gear rather than the earlier bolts, but that can be fixed with a bolt kit.
