Why is there such a horsepower difference?
2001 = 150
2002 = 180
Whats the difference with the engine?

Nothing. Just reprogramed ECU. Just like when you get a chip, no engine mod, just reprogramming.
Re: 1.8T 2001 vs 2002 (MKvw)

Is that a fact? I am thinking about buying a 2001 Golf and want to be sure.
Re: 1.8T 2001 vs 2002 (MKvw)

Chipped they will be almost exactly the same. i think 210/215 hp .
Re: 1.8T 2001 vs 2002 (MKvw)

I have heard that the factory exhaust (downpipe) on the 2002 is a little less restrictive. There was also a rumor that the cams were slightly different. Another rumor is that the 2002's have a different compressor wheel on the turbo. I dont know if any of this is true, just sharing what I have heard/read. Chipped, both cars will put out similar peak hp, but I think the 2002 puts out more torque.

I have read also that the turbo was using parts of the KO4.

'-2 is a completely different engine than an '01. You cannot chip the '01 and get the same performance of a similarly chipped '02. Exhaust and new camshafts acount for about 20HP. In a nutshell, buy an '02 1.8T and forget the chip altogether.

It's no rumor: the turbo is different, you get variable cam timing(which later '01's had) and different software on the '02's.

WRONG, they are basically the exact same when chipped,and at stock there isnt a true 30 hp difference its really only about 10hp check this same thread in the 1.8T forum. Its explained better there. AWW and AWP give the same chipped numbers.
