I have heard that the factory exhaust (downpipe) on the 2002 is a little less restrictive. There was also a rumor that the cams were slightly different. Another rumor is that the 2002's have a different compressor wheel on the turbo. I dont know if any of this is true, just sharing what I have heard/read. Chipped, both cars will put out similar peak hp, but I think the 2002 puts out more torque.
'-2 is a completely different engine than an '01. You cannot chip the '01 and get the same performance of a similarly chipped '02. Exhaust and new camshafts acount for about 20HP. In a nutshell, buy an '02 1.8T and forget the chip altogether.

WRONG, they are basically the exact same when chipped, and at stock there isnt a true 30 hp difference its really only about 10hp check this same thread in the 1.8T forum. Its explained better there. AWW and AWP give the same chipped numbers.
