Just bought a 02' yesterday. It is sweet as hell: Black on black

I mentioned in another post I am pretty worried cause I revved the engine in first to about 6000 RPM's, didnt redline! I also revved two other times to about 5000-5500.... I hope this wont do any prolonged damage!!!!! To all those who buy a car, read the DAMN MANUAL FIRST and dont listen to the salesMAN!
VW Salesman: "Break In period? Just drive it how you want it, these cars can handle it."
You guys know if there is great longevity in the 1.8T motor? Is it bulletproof like it's brothers and sisters: VR6 and 2.0?
thanks guys, happy thanksgiving

Re: 1.8T durability (01silverGTI)

ya i wish i knew that, i am so freakin mad. I revved it above 4000 RPMS AT LEAST 4 TIMES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Re: 1.8T durability (Wreck11)

European Car stated that you should keep the car under 60mph and under 4grand for 1000miles take it from them.
A couple of overzealous uses of the throttle aren't going to ruin your car, if they did do you think any of use would be driving them?
Re: 1.8T durability (Wreck11)

Don't worry about durability, I got mine in May of 00, already have over 44,000, no major problems(aside from the clutch I broke). I drive the hell out of it. If it weren't bulletproof, I'd have killed it by now...
Re: 1.8T durability (Wreck11)

Ya, I am being very careful with it now. I keep it under 3500 RPMS until i hit about 500 Miles, then I will gradually begin to rev it more and more. I think 1000 miles is much too steep. these cars are made by germans, they are war machines!!!

Ditto. 30K miles since 5/00 and I beat mine like a redheaded stepchild.

Amazingly I still have my original clutch. I've had the chip/filter/DV all basically since 5K miles and it's still alive and pulling hard.

For some reason i have met guys who beat their cars and NEVER HAVE ANYTHING GO WRONG!!! lol its a paradox, where as the people who are maticulous end up having the engine rebuilt! I gonna take it easy on my baby for the next 500-1000 miles then I will start to drive it how i please

The corollary to my "bet it like a redheaded stepchild" statement is that I also own a VAG-COM and check every nut, bolt, fluid level, temperature, pressure, sparkplug, valve, etc. on a practically daily basis. It gets beaten but it gets fed well and taken to the doctor.

Re: 1.8T durability (Wreck11)

Got chipped at 300 miles. got 28,000 on the baby now. Window regulators the only real problem. The engine has been very reliable so far.
Re: 1.8T durability (TurboZen)

recently read an article in VW driver that actually said the opposite to what i had previously been told........it said that robust usage in the early years promotes
good seals and reduced oil use in later years - so i wouldn't worry about it

Re: 1.8T durability (Wreck11)

at 500 miles i chipped my car.
at 1000 miles i was drag racing it.
at 15,000 miles its been dragged, street raced, driven hard, and it loves every bit of it.
