12 Second GTI's? How tuneable is the 1.8t?

1340 Views 8 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  syntrix
I'm about to buy a '02 GTI and am curious on how tuneable the 1.8t motor is, I have heard a lot of good things about it but I am a newbie to the VW and 1.8t scene.
I have seen some people posting that their GTI's are in the 12's? That is not too shabby!
What are people doing to acheive these numbers? Whats the most you can get out of the 1.8t motor?
Is there a FAQ I can read somewhere on the 1.8t motor and tuning? I would like to do the basic bolt-ons first. Would I be able to just get a boost controller and raise the boost?
Thanks in advance,
Tommy

With about 4,000 in the motor and 2,000 in the drivetrain you will run easy 12's. Add some slicks and coilovers to make it easier and you will be kicking a$$. Put your fat bastard dub on a diet and you may be able to get 11's. I mean gut the sucker from the waist back. Maybe a CF hood and lighter brakes from RPI and and lighter wheels.
If you want me to brake down all the mods I will. I'm at work so its not like I have anything important to do

By all means... Please brake it down. Wounder how much I could get out of my 02' with $4500.

Well here ya go,
Well ya start with a T3/T4 upgrade and a FMIC. Add a EVo CAI and FM 3 inchexhaust and you will be making 300+hp. If you dont like ATP's software, I hooks you up with some stand alone engine management. A forged DV is a must from what I have read on these pages. I am not sure how well the stock motor cools the oil so you may want to look into an aftermarket oil cooler.
At this point a quaife and clutch are a most, and you may want to look into strengthening the tranny. (tranny not included in my price quote)
To help on the track slicks would be a good idea but for the street Nitto NT555's should do the trick.
Weight loss, our cars are fat bastards, if you can ditch everything from the waist back, lose the spare and back seats and your rear panels everything back there. Add a cf hood and lighter brakes from RPI. If your willing to give up seat heaters get some Sparco's or Recaro's.
All these things are good for the strip but if you are going to street the car I can not stress the importance of big brakes and 4 point harnesses. Be safe with your power. Also I dont know what the bottom end can take s be carefull with throwing rods and what not.

Billy T has a 2000 4 door Golf 1.8T daily driver and has run a best of 12.3 in the 1/4 mile. And he's not finished yet.

not to be ragging on him, and I'm no expert, but from browsing this forum for almost a year, I_Fly_Gti's recommendations seem optimistic. Billy has done the most to his golf out of anyone on this forum, and his best is 12.3, as mentioned. I have no doubt that 11's can be had from these cars, but not easily, not yet. I've watched as people's average times have dropped over the last year. There was a time when Billy broke into the 13's and that was big news. Now, there's more than a handful of people there, and low 14's are very common.
Not saying it can't be done, but it isn't the easiest just yet. Give the aftermarket some more time. Again, I'm no expert
