16V Tranny into A3 1997 2.0L Jetta

I posted about this in the A3 forum, but I figure you guys would know alot more about the 16V tranny since that's what came in some of your cars.
My tranny machined a hole in itself last Friday, and the first used transmission that I came across was a 16V tranny, that supposedly bolts right up to my car. I am getting it pretty much totally rebuilt (bolt upgrade to fix the self-machining problem, synchros, seals, etc.).
I was told that this tranny has a close ratio 1st and 2nd gear, but the rest of the gears were tall like my 8v tranny. I thought that all 16V tranny's were close ratio in all of the gears? What's the deal? Also, how does this tranny perform? What kind of improvement should I expect over my old transmission?
I also had to order a new clutch since gear oil spewed all over my clutch and burnt it up. I ordered a Centerforce dual-friction clutch. I'm pretty sure that I ordered the one for a 93-98 2.0L crossflow engine. I was told that the shaft was the same size in my transmission as in the 16V tranny that I'm getting. So the clutch that I bought to fit my 8v tranny should theoretically work right?
Any help on this is appreciated greatly, as I'm kinda new to the transmission thing. Thanks in advance.

Did you get a A2 tranny or a Passat cable shift tranny? The Passat (16v) cable shift I believe is very similar to the A3 tranny aside from the ratios. The A2/A1 tranny shifts using a direct mechanical connection that is not really likely to attach to your system.

To tell you the truth, I'm not exactly sure what the tranny is coming out of. I'm guessing it's coming out of a Passat now that you are telling me that the linkages are different in the Golf/GTI.
At any rate, what kind of improvement over my wide-ratio 8V tranny should I expect?
Re: 16V Tranny into A3 1997 2.0L Jetta (k2bum)

the tranny will bolt right up. linkage is very similar, only vr6's used cable shifters in a3's, and i know some of the linkage parts are compatible (i have a 94 jetta shift rod on my 91, its weighted).
the shaft is the same
the first two gears are closer then a stock 8v non close ratio a2 tranny, they are much closer then your a3 gears.
in not sure how your spedometer is going ot work but i know there is a way (a2's had cale drievn spedos, a3's ahve a sensor)
your car's 5th gear will be much lower, meaning higher rpms's in 5th gear and a lower top speed your acceleration will be quicker though
i think that covers it. if i left anyhting out, someone will get it for ya...

you were misinformed that the first two gears were closer. First gear and final drive are the same in both trannys, 2nd through 5th are diferent.
final 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 16v tranny
3.67 3.45 2.12 1.44 1.13 .91
final 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 8v tranny
3.67 3.45 1.94 1.29 .97 .80

No, no, no, no, no. You are completely wrong. The A1/A2 (020) 16V transmission will bolt right into your 2L A3. You should look for a 2Y trans out of a later(88-92) 16V, as it will have the correct hole to fit your reverse light switch. The earlier AGB 16V trans will require some re-wiring. The Passat 16V trans (02A) uses cable-shift, and will fit your car, but will require the installation of the cable shift mechanism, and the hydraulic clutch setup. That, and the gearing sucks. Honestly, your best bet is to buy a 16V trans from Kraftswerk, as it will come rebuilt with the bolt kit. You will like the gearing of the 020 16V trans, and you will find that your car accelerates quite a bit faster. Highway cruising will be at slightly higher RPMs, though.
