a friend of mine has a 16v jetta CIS-E, and the thing just died on him the other day. checked for spark-yes, checked cam timing-correct, starter cranks ok
changed injector o-rings, dizzy cap/rotor-fine.
heres the weird part, theres a gas smell comming from the fuel distributor area, but I dont see any gas leaking from anywhere on it (the air filter smells of gas though) while cranking the car the gas smell becomes even more aparent.
Its driving me nuts that I cant find a fuel leak anywhere but I smell it strongly.
anybody know whats going on?
vdubs to the rescue perhaps?
thanks

Re: 16v will not start. HELP? (JNXtheband)

The smell of gas is probably cause when you keep turning the key to "ON", it primes the system with fuel sending fuel to and through the fuel distributor but since its not starting, its just an abundence of fuel that smells. Check the fuses first. A popped ECU fuse stumps everyone. If youre saying it cranks over fine, and at each plug wire end, there IS spark then check the plugs, check the power at the ECU and after that, take it to a VW service center where someone can actually diagnose the car. Good luck,
Rich

The only place fuel can come from under the metering unit is the plunger.
Are the plugs getting wet?
Is the fuel pump running?
Is it sparking at the plugs?
Any info on what happened when it broke down?

Re: 16v will not start. HELP? (Vdubs)

That's a VERY similar problem to what I am dealing with right now. I happen to have an extra CIS-E dist. block, which I am going to swap in when I get home. I think my problem is a broken fuel press reg. (its not building any fuel press).
I'll post what I find this afternoon. Good Luck http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

plugs are slightly fouled but not bad enough to not start the car.
I hear the fuel pump buzzing.
my friend was just driving and it just cut off and would not start back up, he's been smelling the gas odor even before it stopped running though.
heres something else we tried yesterday that i forgot to mention, let the car roll down a steep hill, and I attempted pop starting it like 3 times, on the third try the car started, but it sounded like sh*t, and when I got off the gas it died again.
I tried what I stated above a second time, and it caught once again on the 3rd pop, but no amount of revving could keep the thing going.
this leads me to believe that the car is leaking fuel somewhere where I cant see it and its causing a fuel pressure drop, which may be why its not starting.
any further Ideas?

you're gonna think I'm an idiot for suggesting this,, but might the cylinders have been flooded? if you have some compressed air or CO2 lying around you might want to spray some into the cylinders and on the plugs to get them nice and dry,, I did this trying to start my car,, kept flooding it while trying to start it.. smelled gas,

It has got fuel in the tank hasn't it?
You didn't say wether the plugs were wet or not.
Have all the intake pipes been check?
If you're sure it's a fuel problem you need to pull the injectors (leave them connected and point them ito a clear bottle) jump the pump relay and slowly lift the air flow plate, there should be no fuel till you start lifting and then you should have a constant spray of fuel that gets more as you lift the plate.

Re: 16v will not start. HELP? (grabbit)

There is no vacuum leak, I just changed the plugs, the ECU fuse, and tried starting fluid.
And Nothing!
What else could it be?
Any advice??

Re: 16v will not start. HELP? (Vdubs)

I am the owner of the car that won't start, my buddy that was helping me posted this thread for me.
What can I do to recover the spark?
There is spark coming from the coil and all the wires from the distributor, and the plugs have just been changed.
I am thinking that it has to be fuel related

Pull a lead off a plug and put an old plug in the end, lay it on the intake (or something metal) and crank the engine, does it spark a blue spark regularly?
If you have a good spark test the fuel as i described in my earlier reply.

Make sure you have 12 Volts going to the hall sender on the side of the distributor!!!!!!!!!!. If you have 4 you have an internal short. You can simply hot wire it up to recover spark.
Just use a multimeter and see if you have 12Vs.check hall sender first then coil on the firewall
I hope this works, because it diod for me
