I suppose the 1984-2001 Cherokees were made in diesel form, for Europe. Does anyone know if the Cherokee every made it to North America with a diesel engine? Are there any diesel conversions for the old Cherokee?

the only diesel brought over from Jeep was the liberty and that was 1 or 2 years, no cherokee diesel
was sold over here, and I recently heard a rumor that you can purchase a diesel
crate motor from Jeep to put in a cherokee/wrangler but I'm not sure if that's true. Other than
that you're on your own.
*edit apparently I'm wrong.

Not true. In 1985-1987, they sold a Cherokee with a 2.1 L Renault turbodiesel in the US. They're now, of course, about as rare as hen's teeth.

False. The Liberty *and* Grand Cherokee were available with Mercedes diesels.

I thought those engines were actually VM Motori, despite the whole Daimler-Chrysler thing, no?

No. Liberty was VM Motori, Grand Cherokee was a 3.0L Mercedes CRDi, same as in the ML and GL classes.

I always thought it was a non-turbo. I've been on the trail with one and it seemed under powered but I would love to build one up for trail duties

You can swap in a cummins 4BT engine. It involves some work, but here is a link to PBB outlining a ton of possibilities with the 4bt:

I saw a 4-door Wrangler Unlimited with a CRD yesterday

They are sold in that configuration in Europe.

Horrible, not necessarily. The main issue is that most dealerships had no idea how to service these motors, and the parts are really rare. These motors are used in commercial applications Central/South America and can be used and abused as long as the maintenance is kept up.

I saw a Liberty Diesel here a few weeks ago, thought I was seeing things. I was unaware something like that was produced.
