here's the crx i just picked up for $300

here is the honda motor side by side with the vw diesel

and here's the motor sitting in the car. it's not bolted in, but it fits nicely!

Re: 1985 vw diesel swap into honda crx (lapeer20m)

what kind of tool is required to remove the axle shafts?
it looks like a torx bit, except it has more like 12 points instead of 6.

You should have put it into a MkI Golf (Rabbit or GTI).
Interesting swap idea, but some of the hard-core CRX guys in your neighborhood probably won't like it. At least Honda parts are cheaper and more readily available, though.
You gonna run it on Biodiesel? That'd be different. Biodiesel-powered CRX.

Re: 1985 vw diesel swap into honda crx (ANSAracingb)

I chose the crx because it's light. Less than 100 pounds heavier than a geo metro, but a lot cooler! The hf crx was rated for 56 mpg highway. The golf weighing it 1,000 pounds heavier got nearly 50 mpg. Together, this car and that engine should make for one of the most fuel efficient cars on the road.
i could have simply swapped the motor into just about any vw....but anybody can do that...where is the sense of adventure?
it's only been 2 days since i started the project. It's likely that i will be driving the diesel crx by the end of this week.
one of the best parts is cost....it's pretty much a free project. Paid $300 for the crx, but i should get more than that in scrap for the vw body.

mk2 crub weight is 2445lbs at its heaviest.
http://kumo.swcp.com/synth/crx/specs.html
crx weighs in at 1713lbs at its lightest

2445 - 1713 = 732.
not bad.
thats 2-300lbs lighter than a mk1.

Try again, that's not a fair comparison. That 85 bare bones diesel weighs 2300lbs tops, and a first gen CRX weighs 2000lbs, and you bet it won't be totally stripped down for daily use. You could get the Golf down to 1900 easily totally stripped down.
I give a 200lb difference at the max.

I see your point. I'm just more of a VW guy than a Honda guy any day.

I don't know about that. I've scrapped two VWs (a Scirocco and a 92 GLI), and I got $8 for the Scirocco and $20 for the Jetta. There's not a whole lot of metal in these cars. If you get $300, my hat's off to you!

If you take the car to a junkyard, they might pay more (if it's complete minus the drivetrain).
