ok i havent had second gear for awhile, sometimes 2nd worked but only when it feels like it and still does, so i would skipp 2nd completely and go straght to 3rd, the other day i went to shift to 3rd and it wouldnt go into gear so i went to 4th well that only worked for about 3 hours and then 4th stopped working, wtf, heres where it gets interesting when 4th dissapeared 3rd started working again and when 3rd dissapeared 4th started working , and then 3rd and 4th became brick walls and would block me out competely while sitting still but if i forced it in gear (3rd and 4th) it would sometimes go into gear, but as soon as i would start driving it became easier to shft into those gears but the gears would grind and would not engage, ive tried adjustments and ive taken out the shift tower to see if there was anything noticeably wrong but found nothing that jumped out at me,so i put it back together and it all remained the same 1st,5th, reverse and sometimes 2nd works , everything else kaput!!!! ALSO my car is a 98 , if i need to chang the tranny can i use a 96 passat tranny? PLEASE HELP IM DYING TO KNOW WHAT COULD BE THE PROBLEM THANKS GUYS.

Frustrating isn't it. I have had the same problem with my Corrado for the past year. It's your shift cable ends where they meet up with the trans shift tower. They need to be adjusted. It's a very tedious fine tuning process. I would suggest bringing it to a VW specialist shop who has done the job before. I'm pretty good with anything under the hood, but I still can't get mine sorted out. I've spent countless hours trying to fine tune mine and I still have gears disappear on me out of the blue. I want to punch myself in the crotch.

i also tried switching gears with just the tower
first try shifting with out the car on, from the shift tower:

smooth engagement:
make adjustement and check shifter cable
for damage and or stretching

hard/no engagement:
possibly selector hub bound or
binding. it will be time to open the
trans up.

good luck, as for the passat trans swap, i think it may work

Does the car start without a problem? If you have adjusted the cables (which is not that hard nor tedious) and your still have issues with putting it into gear on the shift tower with the car off then I'd say ther'es something going on internally with the trans. If your very knowledgable on cracking pandora's box then you can fix whatever it is yourself, whether it's a shift fork, the tower, it needs to be re-shimmed or the synchros are gone, etc. If not then don't bother opening it up get a used one and put it in and sell the other one for parts and get some of your money back.
