hi, got an '04 2.0L golf iv 2.0 with 60000 mi. recently the shifter started vibrating while driving. it starts buzzing at about 2200 rpm, doesn't matter what gear or if the car is loaded or stationary in neutral. vibes worst in 1, 3, 5. it's annoying in 2, 4 but not as bad.

took the car to the dealer, they said they found the front exhaust hanger had come unwelded. they rewelded it but this didn't fix the problem. they say the vibrations must be normal then. (they're not.)

vibrations are worst when you actually rest your hand on the stick. if you barely touch it and don't push it against the gear box at all it doesn't vibe much. can you tighten it up so it doesn't push against the gear box?

There are two poly bearings on the main shaft that runs from the shifter to the main linkage/ball just in front of the firewall. Once there, you have the cage and ball, shifter arms, and connectors on the transmission itself. If the bushings, bearings, or ball are worn, and most likely they are, you will get a lot of movement and potentially vibration. Changing out the ball and bushings in the engine compartment area is not too difficult but takes time and attention if you have never done this. There are various rebuild kits on ebay, GAP, and Autohauz. The bearing on the shifter rod are a little more challenging in my opinion. If you have not done so, I recommend you purchase a Bentley manual if you plan on doing any of this yourself. Easy to determine if these items are worn...your gear shifter will have a lot of play and shifting will be sloppy. A new kit will be night and day.

i will get a mechanic to look at it. problem is that the car is under warranty but the dealer says the vibration is normal.

at this point i'm so aggravated with it that i'm willing to pay to fix it even if it is under warranty. i just want to enjoy my new car. i've looked at reviews of my dealership online and it seems everyone has issues with their service department. perhaps another vw dealership might be able to help.

Books4cars.com has every manual under the sun i picked up a factory manual that vw techs used in the late 70's for $25.
If your not checking the parts ur self tell them to look and the bushings and if they bs take it to another vw dealership
