Forget cost for a second. If I had two engines which would be the better choice.
1.) 1.8 16v bored and stroked out to a 2.0.
2.) 2.0 16v
They would have the same displacement so I would assume it would come down to the head right?
Just comparing bottom ends which would be better?
I know nothing about 16v's so help me out here. I can get either one. But just wondering in the end which will be better. The cost would end up in the same neighborhood either way.

Re: 2.0 shootout what would be the diff? (Lunitixx)

I'd say the stroked 1.8L due to the larger intake ports, but I'd rather have the mix of the two the 9A 2.0L bottom end with the 1.8L head.
I personaly prefer the stock VW bottom end, just because of reliability and you can buy a used low milage one cheap.

Vw blocks were almost all originally designed to be diesels, ie; OVER-engineered with 5 bolt mains and such. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif I don't see how you could go wrong with a stock 2.0 bottom end. Like pastpargolf posted, they're too easily had for cheap and in good condition. I'm getting a MILD p&p done to my stock 2.0 head and sticking with the 42mm manifold for auto-x torque. If I were going for the drags, I would get a REALLY worked head, Schricks and stick the 50mm sitting on my garage floor on her. That's too high strung for the tight courses around here.

I understand that completely...most courses have AT LEAST one turn like that to try and confuse you..."shift to first or bog second???" they seem to play with you....but i have had good luck with just slipping the clutch to keep the revs and power up...sounds like a brutal approach but hasn't failed....sometimes shifts to first have!

1.8L block = lighter but will not have location for second knock sensor (if you decide on the CIS-E Motronic swap). Either way it's a toss up, if you run a stock head the 1.8L offers top end gains but ported either head works just as well.
