2.5in muffler on a 2.25in exhaust?

411 Views 6 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  JPawn1
I was recently given 3 free performance mufflers. Each muffler is 2.5 inch. I gave 2 away to my friends. These are prototypes for a company that isn't out yet, nor do I know if they will ever be out. So my question is, will there be any advantages or disadvantages to running a 2.5 inch muffler on 2.25 in exhaust piping for a 2.0? If so what are they?

You will open up the flow a bit at the muffler itself, but not sure if this is going to be any advantage since the piping is still 2.25"

what kind of muffler is it, is it loud?

Jetta97GT...the muffler has a very nice tone I was told. The company has yet to become public, so I don't know if I should divulge the name. It is stainless steel, and they gave me 3 for free!!!!
I was told I could take as many as I wanted (they had about 20 there) but only 3 looked as if they would fit my application. I don't know how loud it will be, but I'm sure it will be louder than my muffler that came with the TT aluminized system.

any other comments on whether or not there will be any gains or losses?

I'm running the opposite. 2.5" piping with a 2.25" muffler. I did this due to lack of backpressure and losing alot of low-end when combined with my 272 cam. I would say that there won't be much of a gain/loss due to the fact that in your case the majority of the performance change would be in the piping. With your piping 2.25" going into a 2.5" muffler, there isn't much of a chance for the exhaust to increase/decrease backpressure. I would slap it on IMHO. If there were any change at all, then it would be more in sound than anything else. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

well, I'm putting the muffler on on Wednsday. I expect there to be a little difference in power. At least I hope there will be, since the design of these mufflers are different than the usual performance mufflers. The dyno plots from AWE show a 3-4 hp gain on some cars with just the muffler alone. I don't usually buy into hype so I'll see how it goes when I put this on, but at least I'n not BUYING into the hype. I'm just getting free hype http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Thanks
