I have a choice of buying 1 of 2 Jetta GLI's.
1. '89 Jetta GLI Wolfsburg. Helios Blue. Recaros, power windows, locks, BBS rims, manual sunroof. 112K. Timing belt, front brakes, front wheel bearings, and head gasket has been done recently. Some rust. Needs an exhaust soon.
2. '90 Jetta GLI. Red. Recaros, power windows, locks, BBS rims, CD player, manual sunroof. ~170K Odometer stopped at 158K. Needs tires. Starter done recently.
Which one should I get? I'm leaning towards the Helios Blue one, but the rust is holding me back.
How bad is the rust? Is it all on one panel or in different places around the car.
If the rust is just surface rust and limited to only a few panels (like the doors or trunk) you could always do the prep work yourself and get that panel painted. A friend did that and it cost him only $75 CAD a panel and it matched perfectly.
If it's all over the car I'd say go for the one with the least rust. A good paint job costs a small fortune and no matter how many mods you do the rust will stick out like a sore thumb.
Personally I'd lean towards the '90.
BTW what were the prices of the two?
I'd go with the Helious just because the coolness of it... I mean, those sweet blue wheels, real rare and special Recaros. And I think the Helios's HAD ABS. every one i have seen did.

The difference in price between the two is $300. The '89 being the cheaper one.
The rust is surface rust, but one spot is pretty big. ~3-4" in diameter and it's on one of the doors.
I think I'll get the Helios. Thanks guys.
