2 Qs bout oil and lights

446 Views 5 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Air_Cooled_Nut
2 quick questions:
1) Do i need to do anything special to go from regular oil to synthetic oil? What are the benefits.
2) I have headlight impact savers from potterman on my mk4 look lights. Im putting kamei headlight lids on em. So i need to trim the impact savers a bit so i can attach the eye-lids. What is the best way to remove em, since they look like they are glued on there pretty good. In other words have people used any solvents to remove them.
thanks

Well, I'm not an expert... But basically, how many miles do you have on your car? Being a '99, it's probably still fairly low. I would just switch to synthetic at your next oil change. Then just keep using it for the life of the car.
Higher mileage engines that have used conventional oil all their lives shouldn't really be switched. It's also not good to switch back and forth.
If you want to use synthetic, I would just switch and not look back. That's what I did with my '98.

Don't know what to tell you about your headlights. I don't have any experience with MkIVs, headlight savers, or eyelids...

The advantage is that synthetic doesn't break down as quickly, so you can change the oil less often. It also is more resistant to forming sludge inside the engine.
I've heard that changing to synthetic later in a car's life, can result in oil leaks. This is because the detergents in the synth. oil break down any oil deposits that have built up... These same deposits tend to slow/stop leaks... Othen than possible leaks, there isn't really a downside other than increased cost.

Do it! Use only pure synthetic oil, not blends. Synthetic will clean out your engine so if you want to play it safe I suggest replacing the filter (not the oil) after 100 miles. Replace it again 500 miles later. Perform a normal oil/filter change at the 3000 mile mark. Done. Now you can change your synthetic oil every 9000-12000 miles.
