20 Questions for 90-92 GLI owners...or other 16V'ers

allright, here's somestuff that has been on my mind since i bought a 1990 GLI 16v 2.0L with 98 K on it this December- and since my experience is a 1990 MPV minivan, i'm not sure if these are quirks unique to my car or problems to be fixed...lets begin.
1.) when i accelerate hard, i hear a kind of turbo-like sound from the rear-passenger side of the car. I guess that would be normal if it were a turbo, but.... Also, its a stock exhaust, so i guess it should be quieter than that.
2.) clutch seems to click about halfway up. With the car stopped, you can hear it click under the car, also. Is this a bad clutch or normal?
3.) Do all these cars rattle like hell when they accelerate in the 4 or 5 rpm range? All the plastic crap starts rattling like hell. i know my front motor mount needs replacing, so will this fix help that?
4.) do these cars overheat in traffic? I was sitting on a bridge on a friday and the temp was up in the 3/4 part of the dial and the check engine light came on. I turned o the heat and this helped, ut i've heard that these cars tend to overheat. Is this accurate?
5.) Anyone checked the manual to see where to jack up the cars. It shows two flaps along the running board area (on the underside) that flip out exposing clear jack holding areas ... at least in the diagram. I swear my car does not have these. I just want to know how to jack it up without busting through some cheap plastic.
Very helpful...OK, here's 3 more i thought of.
- 6. is there an off switch for the fan? the top lever (above the one that slides from hot to cold) makes a hiss sounds in the far left position. I assume that this is the "off" and the 1-4 switch is on 1 (meaning off) yet it still hisses. The quietest mode is the defrost mode. Is this a normal problem; or just a quirk?
- 7. the steering wheel clicks when i turn right sometimes. it sounds like a stress thing, its when i'm pushing the car. would one of those neuspeed bars across the hood fix this? or it might be a bearing in there. I've herad of problems with steering bearing.
-8. squeaky brakes. do you guys have problems with these? i just got the car sent to Big 0 for the fronts (300 bucks plus) and now the rear sare starting to squeak. is this regular, or how quiet are the brakes, typically? Would a brake upgrade help immensely. Right now they are stock.
thanks in advance.

I guess the best thing would be for me to drive a nicely tuned GLI to know what i should be aiming towards. Thanks to the wonders of Al Gore's internet, hopefully somebody with one in tune can share their knowledge. Peace out.

-stock GLI - just trying to get it reliable / tuned.

1) Could be that you have some sort fo mod done to your air intake box, that would account for a noticeable "sucking" noise
2.) clutch seems to click about halfway up. With the car stopped, you can hear it click under the car, also. Is this a bad clutch or normal?
2) Don't know for sure, but mine doesn't

3) WElcome to the wonderful world of the MK2. Here's the deal, your car is a decade old, these cars were not built like vaults to begin with so yes little things creak and crack, etc. Just get an exhaust loud enough to drone them out. Its the noises that are louder than your exhaust you should be worried about

4.) do these cars overheat in traffic? I was sitting on a bridge on a friday and the temp was up in the 3/4 part of the dial and the check engine light came on. I turned o the heat and this helped, ut i've heard that these cars tend to overheat. Is this accurate?

4) Mine doesn't overheat, but you will notice the enigne temp will rise if you are stationary. This is because your engine is using hot air that is being stored under the hod of your car. When you're moving cool air blows through you rgrill and thus keeps the engine temp under control.
5.) Anyone checked the manual to see where to jack up the cars. It shows two flaps along the running board area (on the underside) that flip out exposing clear jack holding areas ... at least in the diagram. I swear my car does not have these. 5) Behind those flaps there is a narrow ridge, if you have a VW jack you can jack it up on that ridge. If you are using a hoist or a different jack, there are raised falt spots that are to be used as jacking points. They're fairly obvious if you look under there.

I my experience a clicking clutch denotes cracked or broken pressure plate springs. The clutch "bite point" may start to move. You will possibly not notice this with an automatically adjusting cable.
If you suddenly can't engage gears, then the springs will have broken completely.
Another common fault is a broken clutch release finger. But this usually will not click.

This could be a main fuel pump failing, see if you can hear that sound when you are stopped as well. I have the same problem right now, and believe me, this is an expensive one.

You might want to try flushing the system, replacing with new coolant, etc. The original system was supposed to be 'closed.' This is a load of bull, that stuff definitely needs changed in 10 years of use. I just picked up a low temp thermostat and fan switch for my car, which should help out

Oh and by the way, we used to have a '90 MPV at home, I just thought I'd share cause that's an odd minivan to have.

A coolant flush and a lower temp thermostat will bring temps way down, don't go too low or your heat will suck. Yes a bad motor mount will cause some bad vibrations

Need more info on this one. Is it speed dependant? or load? or gear? Does it sound mechanical or could it be an exhaust leak? Your discription is very vauge.

2.) clutch seems to click about halfway up. With the car stopped, you can hear it click under the car, also. Is this a bad clutch or normal?
Yes you have a problem here. Could be as simple as a bad clutch cable... or as mentioned before you could have a broken spring in the pressure plate.

3.) Do all these cars rattle like hell when they accelerate in the 4 or 5 rpm range? All the plastic crap starts rattling like hell. i know my front motor mount needs replacing, so will this fix help that?
Yes they all rattle. If it seems excessive in a narrow rpm range, say less then 500 rpms, you may have a sheared off ac/alt/ps bracket bolt. The 2.0l 16v's have an exceptionally bad mounting system that uses the same studs to hold on the bracket as the water pump. If this is the case i would highly recommend upgrading to the older 1.8l bracket. It could be a bad motor mount also.
4.) do these cars overheat in traffic? I was sitting on a bridge on a friday and the temp was up in the 3/4 part of the dial and the check engine light came on. I turned o the heat and this helped, ut i've heard that these cars tend to overheat. Is this accurate?
you car shouldn't over heat. If you only notice it getitng hot when the car is not moving then you probably have a bad fan switch. The thermostat is another culprit. If you temp gauge reads anywhere in the normal range and your radiator and the hoses going to the radiator(the lower one in particluar) are not as hot as the gauge suggests then it's time for a new thermostat.
5.) Anyone checked the manual to see where to jack up the cars. It shows two flaps along the running board area (on the underside) that flip out exposing clear jack holding areas ... at least in the diagram. I swear my car does not have these. I think this one has already been covered.

the only way to get the fan to turn off is to slide the vent control all the way to the left where it says 0. This also closes the vents. The climate controls are another horrible design.
- 7. the steering wheel clicks when i turn right sometimes. it sounds like a stress thing, its when i'm pushing the car. would one of those neuspeed bars across the hood fix this? or it might be a bearing in there. I've herad of problems with steering bearing.
clicks is another hard one to answer. Is the clicking comming from inside the car? like in the steering column? Is it a light click? like some small part clicking or do you mean more of a clunk or thud comming from the engine bay? If it comes from the engine bay then it is 99% comming from a worn out strut bearing. If you need to replace them i recommend going with the vr6 bearings because they last longer. A strut brace wouldn't really help with making the click going away but it will help make your chassis last longer. The stut towers are a high stress area and over time they can brake especially if you have upgraded suspension or just drive your car hard.

. squeaky brakes. do you guys have problems with these? i just got the car sent to Big 0 for the fronts (300 bucks plus) and now the rear sare starting to squeak. is this regular, or how quiet are the brakes, typically? Would a brake upgrade help immensely. Right now they are stock.
the brakes should be quiet but it depends on which pads you have on the car and how hard you use the brakes. Cheap pads and hard brakeing will cause them to over heat and glaze the rotors making them squeak. The stock brakes are sufficent for normal driving, if you have good pads(ferrodo, mintex, pagid...) but bigger brakes never hurt.

I guess the best thing would be for me to drive a nicely tuned GLI to know what i should be aiming towards. Thanks to the wonders of Al Gore's internet, hopefully somebody with one in tune can share their knowledge.
I'd let you drive my gti but you're kinda far away.
