Re: 200 HP Jetta here (Mackie-1604)
Isn't ASR and ESP the same damn thing pretty much???
I drove the new Beetle Turbo S, 6 speed 180 Horse....
I like my 12v VR6 waaaay more....
I would like to check out the GTI 24v VR6.....but it won't make me change cars for it.....
Better off turbo'ing my ride.[/QUOTE]
Actually ASR (Anti Slip Regulation) and ESP (Electronic Stability Program) are two very different creatures. ASR works by first retarding the timing, then if necessary intermitently shutting down fuel injectiors when there is a difference in wheel spin. ESP monitors wheel speed, steering wheel angle, and lateral acceleration to detirmine whether or not the car is in danger of losing contol. ESP can help avoid over, and understeer, as well as help you maintain control in emergency situations by applying any of the individually controlled brakes and if necessary reducing power to the motor. Both are extremely valuable safety features. I constantly set of the ASR in my car, and have had a chance to feel ESP in action in an A4 before. ASR is awesome, but ESP will be a great addition to the VW lineup. Look for it in the new W8 Passat this spring, and I wouldn't be suprised if it became a standard feature in cars with the 1.8T here in the next year. But no offical word on that as of yet. The 180hp 1.8 and the 12v VR6 are very close in performance, however they do feel quite different. The VR6 is much smoother and more natural to drive with its' easy to contol of the line power. The 1.8T takes a little practice to take full advantage of the turbo.
