2000 1.8T Clutch Gone Bad - Only 15,000 km (less than 10,000 miles)

Took my 2000 Golf 1.8T in for a regularly scheduled service yesterday (18 month) and asked them to take a look at my clutch, because of a noise (like a hockey card in bicycle spokes) eminating from tranny when clutch is out and car is in neutral. Had a similar problem before my last service (where I had no more than 8,000 miles), and they lubricated a pivot point that seemed to help temporarily, but makes me question whether they properly diagnosed the problem or not. This time, the dealership tried to tell me that the sound went away with the diverter valve replacement they did (which took 2 services for them to acknowledge), but as expected, nothing had been done about the noise. Once I pulled the head service manager out, they took my car and said I'd have to leave it there so they could pull out the tranny, because it sounded like my clutch was "literally falling apart".
This really bothers me, given that the car is so low mileage and has an even mix of highway and city driving (it's not chipped and I don't really drive it very hard at all). My question is whether anyone else has experienced the same problem and will warranty cover such a problem.

The warranty should absolutely cover it. You're still will under the 2 yr/24000 mile b2b...

remove all mods and demand a new clutch, and new 2nd hear synchros, while their at it see if you can pay the extra for a tdi 5th.

Not to be offensive, but the clutch went because of the way you drive the car. On all cars that I've had, I have never needed a clutch. My 1.8T has 37000 mi on it with 70-80 passes on the dragstrip, KO4 since 30k, chip since 20k and the clutch is perfectly fine. The only time it has slipped is when I "rode" it too much on 17x8 wheels and burnt it. Just keep your car in neutral at traffic lights, do not hold it semiengaged too much when you taking off and it will serve you well for a long time. Your car is still under warranty, so stand for your rights, and get it fixed for free. Peace. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Re: 2000 1.8T Clutch Gone Bad - Only 15,000 km (s320vt)

Thanks for all of the input.
I'd question the impact my driving had on the clutch if I actually ever had to replace the clutch on my old Saab 900 which I put 240,000 km on (never replaced it once).
Don't think my driving habits have changed that drastically to have a clutch go so early. Even if that was the case, less than 10,000 miles is a reflection of poor product quality in my opinion - an opinion mirrored by several others here on the forun (for the 2000 models anyways). Just my $0.02
Let's hope the next one lasts longer.

I see your point, and I have to agree. Hope the next one holds better. Good luck http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

a few things, one a clutch is a wear item, which means it is only covered for 12 months or 12K miles.
After that its on you. Basically it is becuase if somethign is wrong with the car it is going to happen before that. When I was at the dealer we had a car come back the day it left hte dealership, never made it home, had under 20 miles on it, the pressure plate broke and stayed half engaged so it just burnt up.

don't take that as an attack of yoru driving, so I far have done clutches in these intervals, 11K, 6K 17 MILES, and then again at like 34K, and that was only becuase the other half at the time wouldt' let me go to the track and I was commmuting 60 miles each way so they racked up. so I am far from perfect when it comes to clutches.

13k chipped miles and mine is doing just fine. Sounds like you just got a defective clutch, you can prolly get it replaced on VW if you push the issue

Found out today, after dealer removed tranny, that problem is with flywheel. Have to replace because tooth missing. I've heard of teeth missing on gears, but not sure where/how on the flywheel (I assume where pressure plate and flywheel connect??)
Any ideas.
Good part is that they said it was covered under warranty.

Re: 2000 1.8T Clutch Gone Bad - Only 15,000 km (mikebridge)

Planned to get my car back today with new flywheel. But got a message from the dealer saying the problem was more than the flywheel and that they had to put a whole new tranny on order (which could take 7-10 days).
I wonder if I should be asking for a whole new car instead? I'm a bit disappointed to say the least. Haven't had a chance to speak to the mechanic at my dealer yet, but I'm quite interested in hearing what prompted him to replace the whole tranny. Some defective parts from what one serviceman said.
Re: 2000 1.8T Clutch Gone Bad - Only 15,000 km (Gad)

I was gonna say it wasn't teeth on the flywheel.
Early 1.8T gti gearboxes sound like rock crushers cold. It is pretty common. As soon as it warms up a bit, it goes away. Perhaps this is what you are hearing. And maybe the new transmission will fix it. I only hear it once in a while when it is below ~10C out.
