2000 Jetta CD Changer (in trunk) problem

1872 Views 3 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  humulus
I posted this in the stereo forum, but there's very little activity there, so I'm hoping somebody here will have an idea.
The CD changer in my 2000 Jetta stoped working today. Worked fine yesterday, but stoped today. Here's what happened:
My wife changed out the CD's so that she could listen to her music today. After she was done, she put my CD's back in the magazine, and put the magazine in the changer. Later, she picked me up from work, and I hit the CD button and it displays "ERROR" on the readout on the front of the deck. The 1st thing I thought was she jamed the magazine in the wrong way, but when I opened up the changer, the magazine was in correctly. So I hit the eject button and all the changer does is make a real quiet click noise and then nothing.
I've done car stereo work in the past, but I don't think I want to rip the trunk apart just to get the changer out. Any suggestions?
BTW it's a 2000 Jetta GLX with the Monsoon stereo package.
Thanks

No, it does that at this time of year. Try taking out the CDs, drying them off, and trying again. It might work, probably it won't. I actually had my warranty try to service it but they found nothing wrong. It worked for a couple of days and started that crap again. http://****************.com/smile/emthdown.gif

The OEM changer have been known to have some quailty issues. If you can't fix it I recommend replacing it with a panasonic cdp610 and an adapter cable from crutchfield. Mine has been working for 6months no problem http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Re: 2000 Jetta CD Changer (The Great Big Head)

The Great Big Head:
The magazine won't eject though, so I can't take the CD's out to dry them. I was hoping there would be some kinda manual release, but I couldn't find one. I did notice there was a bezel around the magazine hole, is there a manual release under that?
landrumdh:
Does that Panasonic that you recomend work with the stock deck? I would rather not have to replace the head unit as well.
Thanks.
Nevermind landrumdh, I just checked crutchfield's web site.
