Can anyone tell me if the following are all related to CCM malfunction:
1- fuel filler door won't open
2- remote keyless won't function
3- truck lid opens by itself
4- car won't start
(in order of failures over a month's time)
Service advisor states, "the CCM replacement should fix all these problems for a total of $811 (module, diagnositics and labor for install) WOW! That's a lot.

I believe that sounds like it... but check online for parts and see if it is easier to DIY, assuming there are no computer configs that need to happen with VAG tool.

Re: 2000 Passat V6 Manual - Comfort Control Module Issue (becapassat)

I am very interested in whether or not the comfort control module was truly the root cause of BECAPASSAT's "VW won't start" issue. My 1999 Passat, 1.8T Manual (59K miles) has been giving me intermittent problems with not starting (no clicking sound, nothing) when I leave it sitting in the sun for a few or more hours on a warm (over 60 degrees) day. Note, the car starts just fine in the morning after it has been sitting in my garage all night. It's when I go out to the parking lot at the end of a (sunny and warm) workday that it won't start. Once, I get it started (after about 20 tries), the windows won't go down for several minutes.
I am female and really concerned about getting stranded on the road. I had this exact issue arise last spring/summer and VW could not duplicate or diagnose the problem. They replaced the battery at the dealership last year. I am the original owner of the car, and have gotten all of my scheduled maintenance done through the dealer. The strange part about this problem is, it does not occur during the winter months or on cloudy overcast days. I live in Delaware. However, as soon as the weather got much warmer (last week) the problem immediately came back again. I got stranded in Philadelphia yesterday for about 30 minutes because the car would not turnover after I left it for a few hours. As soon as I try to start the car, the car radio will immediately come on even though there is absolutely no clicking sound when I turn the key in the ignition. I kept trying to start the car over and over again and finally it kicked over. However, once I got it started the electric windows would not work until I was driving on the road for ~20 miles. So, I have to use the ac.
When the problem arose again last week, I called my VW dealership, reminded them that my car had this issue last spring/summer, and it is now happening again. So, the dealership had me bring it in on Friday, 4/08 and determined that a new ignition switch was needed to correct the problem. Again, they said they could not duplicate the problem while the car was in their possession. I called them again this morning, since the ignition switch did not fix the issue, and brought the car in. I am really concerned that they have not been able to find the root cause of this problem. Any help/input/advice. How would I be able to tell if this is a comfort control module issue. My remote key fob works. I am scared to get stranded.

Re: 2000 Passat V6 Manual - Comfort Control Module Issue (jrahaim)

It actually is a known problem I believe....corrosion on the plugs/wires going into the comfort control module. I too went through all the same symptoms and the ignition switch replacement before a superlative tech dove into the problem.
In my case, the corroded wires/plugs were cut out and bagged, sent to the VW area rep. VW stood up twice to the problem, haven't had any issues in years since the correct diagnosis and repairs.
Can't say the same about the half-ass designed control arms.....grrrrrrr.

Re: 2000 Passat V6 Manual - Comfort Control Module Issue (jrahaim)

We can't say yet if the problems are truly over. We got the car back last Friday after the dealer had it for a week. Over the weekend and on Monday the car behaved normally in every way. The one item that was not CCM related was the fuel filler door. The door is cable actuated and the cable needed to be spliced. That too is now working as it should. Needless to say we will be keeping a close eye on this starting problem and if anything comes up will post it here.
I see now that corrosion and worn wires seem to be the source of many CCM problems and fixing these is a lot cheaper than replacing the CCM. I wish I had know this before! Keep your eyes and ears open about this problem. Because based on a Canadian poster, a good tech can diagnosis and fix this problem in just a few hours. It makes me really question the quality of techs we have around here. Does anyone know how we as service customers can insure we get good techs?

Re: 2000 Passat V6 Manual - Comfort Control Module Issue (becapassat)

I imagine by now, that most dealers are aware of the problems with these comfort modules by now.... if not, they should read tech bulletins

I think word of mouth is the best...
Sorry, I wish i could have helped you earlier....

I've been dealing with almost all of the same issues for a while now. Things recently got 'bad' when I could not start the car, and at the same time the power windows stopped working.
Over time I thought it was the CCM and actually replaced it from one on Ebay. (If you do this, there is a roman numeral on the module I, II, III, etc. be sure that the roman numeral matches). I was told that a dealer had to program it, so I brought it to one and $285 later they said they could not program it due to bad cables and / or harness. I replaced the harness with a friend, who decided to cut the entire carpet across right at the front of the seat rails. For those that don't know the CCM is directly underneath the driver's side floor. Over time water can build up in there. That canbe sunroof drains, or the drain hole under the battery in front of the firewall. I wasn't so lucky, I noticed that the wetness was orange coolant, so that's another story.

Anyways, There is a long wire harness that runs along the side of the kick panel going forward. a SINGLE WHITE WIRE is bolted to the frame, on the floor, as a ground. That single wire (brushing and re-seating solved the starting and power windows not working. I can confirm that the gas door is not within the ccm.

Best of luck to anyone working this problem! If water is a big problem you might as well drill a small drain hole down there! I left the carpet out for now to continue to work on other 'little' things...

Thank you for this info and welcome to this forum. I assume you have a B5 Passat? Tell us about it.

Hi Scott!

Indeed I have a 2000 Passat 4motion wagon, and am in love with it, despite all the common issues etc. I have had it 8 years now, and bought it when I was living on Maui, Hawaii. The car has zero rust, as when purchased the original owner installed a device called 'bodygard', which sends electrolysis throughout the chassis 24/7, making it impossible to rust. Even the original mufflers are as shiny as the day they were new. I made the decision to move back to CT in 2016, and was right in thinking this car would be awesome in the snow, and of course I was right. It cost $1900 to ship, a lot less than buying a new / used unknown car. Being on a relatively small island for so many years, I bought it at 89,000. 5 years later, it is now 168K miles, and is such a powerful machine!

So far I've replaced the alternator twice, as there is something draining the battery, which is why I've become so knowledgeable about the CCM. Otherwise I did spend $4300 on a new transmission, and about $2k on replacing the entire front end, control arms, suspension, axles/cvs, brake lines, and all that.

Long story short, this car gets you where you need to go! I am in and out of NYC often, and it handles everything you can imagine for a very comfortable ride. It is very 'happy' going 100mph when it feels like 65. The issues I have are all really basic but do add up. I have a battery disconnect which I use because of a drain somewhere, my mirrors used to 'hum', but by disconnecting the right side one and putting the selector to right side works for now. Both rear doors only open from the inside, not a huge deal, but something on my list. The tailgate lock is the only way to engage / disengage the alarm, but it does not lock, all other doors do. I will be on your forum a lot!

I'm attaching a pic of my car on top of the Maui Crater at 10,000 feet, above the clouds. From the outside the car is dealer new!
