I just got my 2001 GTI VR6 and brought into the dealer and a friend there told me that I had the 2002 Dash and I also have the 2002 rims on my car. I have only driven in a 2000 a couple of times, so I dont know what else is differant. Why would my 2001 have 2002 parts? TIA

Thanks you for being so rash nate. I guess you know everything about these cars huh? Well for your information yes there is a 2002 dash. It doesnt have the lines in it for the pass. side air bag it is smooth. As for the whhels they arnt 02 wheels just the 17s. There arent 02 wheels but there is a newer model dash.

Clearwater FL? Where you live in clearwater? I live in Largo. This isnt Ryan is it??? I havent seen the rims that I have on any 2001's only on 2002's thats why i ASSUMED they were 2002. I didnt know they where an option on 2001's. But how did I get a 2002 dash in a 2001? Was it just that my car was made at the same time as the 2002's and they just "threw it in there"??

My Golf has the "2002" dash also and it was made 01/01. FYI you are no expert either. There is no 2002 dash. OR maybe there is a 2001 and 3/5 edition. ROFLMAO.

I have a 01 GTI with no airbag cutout, it's not a 2002 change.

Well excuse me, I have never seen a 01 with that dash. AT my dealer we have never gotten a 01 with the smooth dash and it is a pretty big dealer, guess we just lucked out. The first time anyone saw the smooth dash was all of the 02s. Sorry to come across like an ass but you guys have to understand all I read are these posts bashing dealers for everyithing. Its a kick it the face to techs like myself. I get a car @ work I dont let it leave without being 110 percent. And when I see " because your dealer is a liar" that pisses you off be cause its me personaly your talking about. not lying just never seen one until a 02.

I wasn't trying to be a dick, but you have to admit that there are a LOT of dealers that will just talk out of their ass, saying they had a new 2002 gas cap, 2002 valve-stem caps, etc.. etc...
All I was saying is that there is no specific '02 dash and no specific '02 wheels. If the dealer is saying otherwise, it is not the truth, whether it is an honest mistake or an outright lie to make a sale or make the customer feel better about what they bought.

Well considering that there are no major changes in the car from 2001 to 2002 other than the motor and drive train and some minor interior changes like the steering wheel...we all have 2002 parts on our 2001s. I know I do. I even have a 2002 gas tank, windshield, and front fenders....not to mention the hood and grille, and VW emblems off of the 2002..etc....

That dash was on later 2001s

Actually,
From what I've seen the seamless airbag that you are referring to was available on 2001 GTIs from Brazil. I have a 2001 from Wolfsburg and I do not have the seamless airbag cutout, nor do I have the side curtain airbags. In conclusion I would consider yourself to have a late 2001 built including all of the running changes of 2001.

Hmmmmm... My 2001 GTI was made mid-way through 2001, and it has no lines for the passenger-side air-bag either. Did the dealer mean 2001.5, perhaps?

Re: 2001 with 2002 "Stuff" (Niello)

The only different `thing`on the 2002 dash is that on the dashboard locker (or how do you call that in plain american?) there are two rubber knots on the dash (not on the door) wich have an feather inside you see them when you open this `locker`. My wifes Golf 2.0 2001-11 has them and my Golf V6 2001-6 not. Thats the only thing i see thats different on the dash. (excuse me for my bad explanation)

Re: 2001 with 2002 "Stuff" (Niello)

since I work in the automotive industry let me just say that there is very little rationale about these sorts of changes....
sometimes a company like VW will source a cheaper version of a part or that part was waiting to be introduced for a while.. Sometimes or really most of the time they put whatever on the car they can find lying around. They are all about not losing one second of assembly time....if there new shipment of dashes didn't arrive they will use old dashes...that sort of thing.
They will come to us and say...we want to add this new thing to the car or change the part that is there...we have to try to get that equipment designed and fabricated and installed at some normal shut down time for the line then there is testing and if it doesn't work quite right they go back to the old way for a while...
also some plants may use different parts because they decided to pay for the new equipment there but it is not in the budget for another plant or maybe the shipment of new parts didn't make it to one of the plants one day...that sort of thing.
We often make fun of the customer's manic and sometimes scatterbrained approach to changing the function of the assembly line. A lot of times the salesmen and the middle management muck things up.
so what I am saying is that there is little to no way you can interpret what is going on from the outside.
