Today I brought my Jetta wagon 1.8t wagon with only 397 miles in for service b/c my MIL light is on. The dealer mechanic told me the problem lies in with the "Secondary Air Injection". What could possibly be causing this problem?
Has anyone ever had this problem before, this damn early? My wagon is not even broken in yet. Thanks in advance.

Re: 2002 1.8t problem at only 397 miles........what can it be? (MK4AVANT)

this was an issue on mk3 cars as well.if i remember correctly it was in relation to a broken or leaking line on the air pump,on the 1.8's its on the very bottom and to the left of the oil filter, cant miss it.it has that stupid plastic air hose that runs up to the air box.
maybe someone else might have a better take on this but this is what i heard.

I wouldn't be too concerned, as long as dealer can diagnose and fix. You're more likely to have these kinds of failures early in break-in than later down the road. All cars have an "infant mortality" rate, when the failures are due to quality defects in manufacturing or final assembly. Toyota/Honda may have the industry's lowest rate of initial failures, but it even happens to them. Has nothing to do with how durable your car will be in the long run. Hope this is your only problem.

My hoopty had the same problem at 25k. The dealer fixed it and a few days later the CEL light came on. DV went bad. What's next; probably the MAF then the window regulators. VW's QC department must be drinking some funky water.

Got it back today, dealer mechanic said it was a loose ground that was causing the MIL light to come on. No MIL no more.

Don't feel bad, I have just now had my NB for 12 months and, it went to the dealer 5 times in the past year for non-maintenence issues. A broken power window module, broken key (not physically broken, the car wouldn't start with it), a broken seat, very bad surging (replaced the DV) and a CEL all prompted me to take it to the dealer. And to think, the car barely has 9k miles on it. http://****************.com/smile/emthdown.gif
