Re: 2002 B5 Chip now availible (BBear)
quote:

Valois - I am pretty new to this chipping thing. Can you explain how it works - I mean like what actually changes or happens? And does it reduce the reliability of the engine or cause premature wear? And for the life of me, why doesn't VW do this as stock?

BBear, the software of your engine management system (ECU) is changed, the MAPs for requested boost , timing and fueling are changed. There are a variety of reasons why VW does not do it from the factory. They are dealing with a wide variety of clients, insurance rates, increased maintenance requirements, less room for error. The driver has more to do with the longevity of the car at this level of power. If you perform maintenance properly, do not rag the car at every opportunity, it should not negatively impact the lifespan. That said understand that this is a relatively new model, and it has not been proven on this model that chipping will not reduce longevity, we would need to see how these cars hold up 4 or 5 years down the road in comparison to an unchipped model. Generally those that chose to chip are enthusiasts, and take better care of their cars than the general public.
