Diverter valves don't make annoyingly loud psts like blow-off valves do. A diverter valve routes boost back into the intake and a blow-off valve routes it into the atmosphere. That's why the diverter valve is quieter than a blow-off.
The 1.8T was designed to use a diverter valve and works best that way. People have installed blow-off valves but generally run rich.

Check the FAQ,s they are full of great info.

turbo and intercooler dont go sepreated, anyway, if you get a bypass or Forge DV, run a better intake, your PSS will be achieved

There are (older) cars out there that are turboed but not intercooled...
On an interesting note, Talons come with BOVs that are routed back into intake (we still call them BOVs in the DSM world though, not DVs as in the VW world). Mine is quite loud from inside the car, most likely due to the aftermarket cone intake. Don't know what it sounds like from the outside though. Aftermarket BOVs, and BOVs vented to the air would definitely be louder.

IMHO the name comes from where the vented boost is routed and makes sense. A DV diverts the air back into the intake where as a BOV "blows off" the boost into the air. They both provide the same function but with different methods. So a BOV modifierd to reroute to the intake has essentially become a DV unless you have a hybrid setup that pushes some back into the intake and some into the air. Also, my aftermarket Forge DV is much louder than stock but no where near BOV loud.
Edit: And regarding the older cars w/ no intercoolers this is very true. Consider for instance all the older Volvos you see that have intercooler badges on them.

True, I was just noting the different lingo used by each car world. After 4+ years of being a turbo owner, I've never come across the term DV until joining VWVortex.
CBV (compressor bypass valve) would be another term used for "the thing that routes the compressed air back into the intake...blah blah".
"A rose by any other name..."
But now we're way off topic.

Don't get a BOV unless you like having reliability problems! http://****************.com/smile/emthdown.gif
If you get a Cold Air Intake such as an EVO for example, this will give you slightly better power AND that cool "Phhhiishh"! Sound You crave!

When I got mine, a WRX driver thought I had a BOV just from the sound! HeeHee!
