I just read in the mag Car&Driver that the Turbo S Bettle has a Max of 11.6 psi. So the GTI has the same psi, right. That is lame...So I can only increase the pressure by a few lbs!? I personally think the 1.8T should be making like 220hp with that kind of PSI. What if my Focus had a 11.6max PSI? It would have like what? 250hp, because on a 8psi turbo, it has 190hp at the wheels. Just curious, since I'm thinking of a chip. The 2001 has a max of 8.4 or something, the 2002 has 11.6, the 2001 has 160hp vs 180 in the 2002. Thats a 20hp diff. So if I increase boost by another 3psi, to 14.6, then I should have about 200 hp at the motor, right?

It's not all about psi. The size of the turbo is just as important. It's all about how much air you can push through the system. A big turbo with the same psi pushes more air. Whenever I see NA guys that go FI, they generally put on a decent sized turbo. That. most likely, is the case with the aftermarket kit for the Focus.

Re: 2002 GTI 1.8T has a max of 11.6 psi!? (rudyr)

Like rudyr said, a larger turbo (higher quality) moves more air AND the tempature of that air is also colder then a little turbo that is 5x the tempature trying to stay in boost. I rode in a Honda SI the other day which a friend of mine fabricated his own setup, his turbo is the size of my head and he runs 7psi out of it. The car is running 12.3's and 1st, 2nd, and 3rd are purely useless on street tires. So there is alot more to forced induction then meets the magazines, I can't wait to get some books on it, I have much to learn.

I wouldn't sweat it, most gauges are only good references for that particular gauge (meaning they are not that accurate). It is like trying to compare dynos and you just really can't because of all the different ways of measurement, temp, and blah blah blah. Mine stock makes 10psi, but spikes to 12psi if I am correct.
