-= 2004-2005 GTI MK5, first pics =-

If you guys haven't picked up the latest issue of Motor trend, do it. It has a 2 page spread of some draw-ups of the MK5 GTI.
I have mixed reactions. My first thought was.. "Hmm... Audi A3". The entire car has a total likeness to the current Audi A3. Which is excellent. The Audi A3 has a much more agressive roof line and overall sportier shape. The rear taillights are almost the same shape, but the actual tailights are patterned after the B5.5 Passat.
However, I DID NOT like the new front. It shares some of the same design cues from the Passat B5.5, like the front grill. But the headlights are very oval in shape and almost reminded me of the current Neon's headlights.
The supposed released date for the MK5 is 2004-2005. Along with the new Jetta MK5 , which pictures were not published.
Motor Trend reports that VW is trying to differentiate the Golf and Jetta platforms with the MK5. Here's some news though, Motor Trend confirms the release of the AUDI A3 THE SAME YEAR THE NEW MK5 IS RELEASED !! Could this mean the availbilty of the venerable S3? Even if it isn't it gives us Golf/GTI freaks ALL WHEEL DRIVE to work with.
Engines apparently will be the same.. 1.8t and 24v VR6. Although there is speculation about the 2.0 8v being weeded out of the line-up. Rumors of a 16v 2.0 have been circulating.
And as for the Beetle, MT magazine states that it's still up in the air. Basically the two possible routes are either A.Upgrade the car along with the rest of the Golf/Jetta's B. Rumors of completely ridding the Beetle from the line-up.
Granted, I don't know how much of this is true or not, but MT seemed pretty confident in it's reports.
Just a few more notes about the GTI MK5 pictures, it had dual exhausts a la New Audi A4, and had much more agrresive, low profile wheels ( I know, its a concept drawing ). And possible re-work of the rear twist beam suspension to possibly rear wish bone? http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif
I'm pretty psyched about it, althuogh I have to admit, in 2004-2005, I think it'll be time for me to upgrade to something a little more.... pimpable

nope, sorry, I tried to find the pics online, but nowhere

BTW, I'm a Borders / Barnes and Nobles slut. I just sit there and read all their magazines and leave.

I just got my April 2002 issue of Eurotuner. Here's what they say about the Mk5:
"All this time we've been waiting for the 24v VR6 to hit the American shores, but now it's here, and it's getting replaced in 2004. The Mk 5 Golk, which is scheduled as a '04 release and will measure two thirds of an inch longer and have a 3.8-inch longer wheelbase, is rumored to not only house the 230hp 3.2L VR6, but also offer fully independent rear suspension. The Golf will be offered in both 3-door and 5-door hatchback configurations, and there may even be a stripped GTI version offereing a manual transmission and few other features in order to get back to VW's GTI roots. Don't be content with the 3.2L, however, as VW is seriously considering dropping in the 271hp W8 if there is comsumer demand.
Well I'm interested in the W8, but I guess my gas bill will be a lil' higher

Anybody else want the W8? we need consumer demand

8 cyl GTI? yeesh. I thought they were trying to get back to their roots. It'll probably never happen though. I'd be happy with the 2.0 16v, which is more than just a rumor...
