Hi all,
Although I've had other VW's in the past (Jetta & Passat) this is our first Touareg. I took it in for an oil change and it was outrageous what VW dealership wanted to do it, so figured I'd go back to doing my own oil changes, at least for this car.

2006 4.2L
113k miles
son's car, easy driver to and from work and school

A couple of questions:

• I see there is an oil kit from Ravenol for $100 - is it worth it?
• should I use 5W-40 or can I use 5W-30? The 5W-30 Ravenol kit is cheaper
• can I use another fully synthetic oil? Mobile-1, Amsoil, Castrol? I've even heard good things about the Kirkland Fully Synthetic?

Recommendation is 5 -40
Mobil 1 should be good.

Use any vw 502 or 504 approved oil. Find oil on sale. Any approved oil will provide similar results. Boutique oils don’t really justify the increased cost for daily driving. Buy a reputable filter. Save your money for gas in that thing!
