I dunno, people who but luxury land barges are kinda like minivan buyers, people care more about inside looks and features.

And the inside of Wagoneer doesn't look loke a bad place to be and it would almost hold my entire comic book collection. Almost:

The Rivian SUV does look like someone took that Jeep... Thing.. and cleaned up the more egregious styling elements.

And the Rivian badging does suffer a bit, from both the size and a passing resemblance to Autozone generic chrome lettering, but it's a nice vehicle.

Disagree with the Jeep GW comparisons. The Rivian is the essential shape of a big American SUV so it's easy to draw comparisons to other big American SUVs but I'll tell you in person it looks like nothing else on the road. Also worth noting the R1S debuted 3 years before the Jeep.

From those angles and that wrap there are a few Jeep ques but from the front without wrap it looks pretty unique. I see a little Land Rover and International Scout.

This is true, but also Rivian has the option to offer a less expensive option. If you can't make a truck/suv for 79,995 or less at this point you aren't going to be a mass market player anyway.
The goal of these kinds of incentives is to make EVs more affordable for the masses, if it pushes Rivian to get more affordable products on the market then I'd call that a win.

Well let's be realistic. Startups like Rivian and Lucid need the more expensive vehicles to start with, as they can make a certain profit (or reduce losses) with lower volume production, compared to lesser priced models. This gives them the opportunity to get their entire integrated supply chain (supply chain and production lines) up and running, before they can introduce a more volume model that's priced much lower. It's the same textbook approach as Tesla.

That Rivian is an American company, manufacturing in the U.S., it would be nice if they included in the tax credit as well, as it'll help a little with their marketing and sales, considering a foreign competitor can be government subsidized (directly or otherwise) and still do business in the U.S. Considering the relatively small volume Rivian will be doing in the next couple of years, it's not like the total tax credit going towards them would have been a huge amount relative to what others will be getting. But then again their product doesn't have a direct competitor yet (neither the Lightening nor the upcoming chevy EV truck are really direct competitors), so they'll be fine without.
