Not clicking a jalop link but there are two things I'd like to see on the new Taco: Improved rear seat room in the double cab and a PHEV version with ~40mi EV range.
Probably won't see that until the 2024 next generation model. The next-gen 4Runner and Tacoma be powered by hybrid inline-4 (most likely connected to the new 2.4L in the Lexus NX). I'm getting this from a very trusted source who has been accurate on everything Toyota/Lexus to date.

I just bought one - here are my main wants.
  • Add an 8-speed transmission — current one has good/tight 1-3 gears but falls on its face after shifting to the 1:1 4th. I like the tall 6th for cruising on flat land but 5th and 6th are both overdrives and too close, so when climbing a hill it drops straight to the 1:1 4th with a big RPM increase. Needs more intermediate gears.
  • Add standalone rear locker option without having to get a $10k pricier trim
  • Add standard LED headlights
  • Add height adjustable driver's seat on all trims (even if just manual)
  • Add a PHEV option
  • Replace both engines with with a longitudinal version of the T24A-FTS (NX 2.4T with 275 hp and 317 lb-ft). IS300 and similar already have a longitudinal turbo engine so not without precedent.

What I'd like to see:

  • IS500 V8 but tuned more for torque (kind of like a hail mary before the next gen is undoubtedly hybrid/electric)
  • Keep the manual transmission
  • Manual available on double cab with long bed

Is this a refresh? Or the 4th get?

I hope the 4th gen has a better motor. Give me a Hybrid turbo 4 with about 275hp/350tq please. 30 miles of plug-in EV-only range would be icing on the cake.

I don't expect any powertrain changes until the true 4th gen but given what the Tundra now has, and Toyota saying that EVERY vehicle they make would have a hybrid option, I expect a motor like that in the next-gen Taco.

As for the rest, I mostly adore my current Tacoma to the point where I'm seriously questioning not just keeping it forever, but if I had to nitpick...
  • The current engine is fine, but the transmission is kind of dumb, smarten it up or give it 2 more gears.
  • LED headlights should be standard
  • Needs a driver's side grab handle for getting in and out (hey, I'm old)
  • The tailgate should lock with the fob, or at least a button inside. Currently, you have to take the little key apart to lock and unlock and that's just dumb.
  • Add parking sensors to the front bumper like there are on the rear.

The camper shell store offered to add a module that pops it with the factory keyless entry, maybe look into that.

I have the basic key so not as annoying, plus if I'm back there I already have my keys out to open up the shell lock.

Yeah, there is a kit to make it work with the fob, and if it wasn't a lease, I would have done it already. Thankfully it's only something I've felt necessary a couple of times but long term, I'd want it more easily locked and unlucked.

---------------

So the rear fringe here makes me wonder if this isn't a genuine 4th gen test mule of some sort. The next Tacoma will be joining all their other BOF vehicles on the new platform and I think that's coil sprung IRS.

As a current owner:

  • Seating position or at least a way to change the height
  • Terrible transmission programming
  • Better motor that makes torque lower than 3k rpms
  • The terrible ergonomics of just about everything (why are there 4 buttons for the sunroof?!)
  • The exhaust drone
  • The rear diff drone on decel

Having just passed 70k miles on my 2018 and driving it for every single one of them I only have two real gripes; the transmission and the navigation system. Both horrendous. Trans is never in the gear you want it to be in, bounces around constantly, makes the adaptive cruise worthless on anything other than perfectly flat roads. The nav is so bad at finding anything its worthless. Even if you have the exact address of the place half the time it wont even recognize its existence. I installed an inline switch so my passenger can use it while driving and its still nearly impossible to get it to work. Its ETA estimate is always off by huge chunks of time, the longer your drive the worse it is. Sometimes its off by literal hours.

Get rid of that awful exhaust note/drone.
As a current owner:
  • The exhaust drone
Do you guys both have double cabs? Ive never heard anyone mention this drone and I dont have it. Maybe I cant hear it over my tires/camper/etc. or maybe its just so quiet compared to my Golf that I dont notice ha.

I have a double cab. The exhaust drone, especially at lower RPMs, was surprising when I first got the truck. My opinion should be taken with a grain of salt though, I've never understood the hype for Tacoma's -- they're just OK trucks, barely mediocre. If I wasn't basically gifted my truck (was my late FILs truck), it would not have been my first choice for a truck.

The question was what do we want, not what we think will happen. I can dream, can't I?

I have only owned my Tacoma for about 3 weeks (250 miles), so I can’t really comment to much on the transmission as it’s not even broken in yet. The truck does seem to be a little sluggish compared to my old 4th gen 4runner. The only other complaints I have that would be nice in the next gen:
  • Better sound system. The current stereo sucks, especially when using Apply CarPlay.
  • No rear HVAC vents
  • Improvd fuel economy

I have the LED headlights and they work great, but I get oncoming cars hit there high beams at me often. Not really sure if they need to be aligned.
Besides that, I have no other complaints yet, just getting used to driving my first truck.
