if you have a short shifter or anything take it out...but just tell them its grinding when i shift into second gear, and i think it could possibly be the second gear syncro, but wanted to see what you guys thought

i thought it was just a fluke...
sometimes mine wont even hit 2nd in my 2.0 97 gti...
should i bring it in under warrantee?
they will prolly say it is my short shifter though

Just tell them the problem your having and they will look at it and figure it out. They'll probly try to blow it off but be persistent and tell them its starting to be a big problem! And with your short shifter they will probly blame it on that so it will void your warranty and you have to pay. So be careful!

definately take out your short shifter. I just took my jetta into the dealership because i blew out 2nd gear and they voided my warranty because of my short shifter.

There should be a FAQ on this.
1. You probably need a new 2nd gear synchro
2. You probably need to bleed and refill the clutch slave cylinder (bleed and refill the brakes while you're at it and have not changed the brake fluid ever)
3. You might need to get a new clutch slave cylinder
4. Don't know about the linkage shifters in the 8v cars... but you may need to have the linkage adjusted. Side to side movement, and front to back movement.
Last but not least... and I hope VW is listening.
5. Forget the warranty. It is not even worth the paper it is printed on. The grinding is one of many wonderful standard features courtesy of Volkswagen. The dealer will tell you "can't duplicate problem" and "everything is fine."

They don't use the "Search" feature either.

They don't forget. They just don't read. One can't forget something he/she has never read.They don't use the "Search" feature either.

2.0 famous for breaking the little golf ball in the linkage. will definetly make it sloppy shifting and grind second. Look in your bentley at the exploded diagram of the shift linkage. It is item 6 "relay lever". Easy to change and about $60 - 80 at the dealership. I've cahnged this on 3 of my friends cars. When the ball disappears it leaves a little plastic star looking piece or nothing bu a metal stud behind. Hope this helps.
