Anybody know if the exhaust on our cars yields any verifiable increase in power over the stock 1.8t exhaust. It seems my has gotten louder in the last 500 miles (have 4400 miles), it is just about right in sound level for me now, anybody else experience this? Anybody dyno the before and after when they went aftermarket. Last Question, Which if any, aftermarket exhaust, yields significant increase without being louder than stock? catback primarily, and chipped. Jetex and Remus have been mentioned how about miltek. comments welcome

Re: 337 exhaust more power than stock? (Mick1)

It's funny you should mention yours getting louder; on the way up to the socal/norcal meet on Saturday, I noticed mine had grown a little louder than the day before. Then while returning on Sunday, I noticed it again.
Either I'm going deaf, or the system is opening up a tiny bit. I know bike exhaust systems do this, so it doesnt sound too far off for a car system to do it.

I think mine has gotten much louder, but I also added a CAI. not offensive sound but http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

As for aftermarket exhaust, I'm a pretty big fan of
1.)down pipe (APR or Eurosport) $350-400
2.) TDI mid pipe ($40)
3.) stock back
all bosts up together, (TDI mid pipe gets rid of resonator) as low as $400 if your lucky http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

That's exactly what I'm planning on doing this Spring. Have you heard this combo? I'm curious what the TDI midpipe sounds like with the 337 muffler (growl/drone - good/bad)?
I'm probably going to go with the Eurosport DP since it has a reducer that will mate directly to the TDI midpipe (which the APR DP does not have).

Re: 337 exhaust more power than stock? (xact)

Just got around to install the APR downpipe from the christmas special last weekend. It was a pita to get the bolts on the stock sleeve to come off. The turbo bolts were a piece of cake after the WD-40 soaked in. The APR downpipe comes with a reducer sleeve and no turbo gasket. Make sure to be careful when taking off the stock downpipe so that you don't destroy the gasket. I had mine in pieces and had to glue them back together.

First time I had the APR downpipe under the car and fitting it in, the APR downpipe with reducer sleeve won't fit in 'cause it is too freakin' long. I don't know if i am doing this correctly, but the reducer sleeve reduces to the same exact diameter as the stock exaust's, so that means you have to use the stock sleeve to connect/hold the reducer and stock exhaust together. ackk! There was no way I could connect the APR downpipe to the stock exhaust due to the length of the downpipe. So off to Home depot, got a blade that cuts metal, hook it up to my skillsaw, and hacked of about four inches of stainless steel tubing from the downpipe. In all, it mated in perfectly with the stock exhaust.
*is the Eurosport an easier install???*
There is a noticable increase in power on the high end, but maybe it's just my mind playing with me.
I am still convincing myself that this is a worthy mod.
good luck!

I have a ATP 3" and race section on my car and some guy asked me what aftermarket exhaust I had... He was convinced that it was not stock... I guess it got louder

Guys I have this setup you are talking about and I love it. It sounds just like stock but with a more pronounced meaner growl to it. One of these days I'll have to get around to posting a sound clip to let you all hear it.
You can get this all for under $400 if you go with the APR downpipe but if you plan on going with the Eurosport you can forget it unless you catch the group buy.

Re: 337 exhaust more power than stock? (silversurf3r)

I had my resonator removed (kinda sad that it didn't change the sound much) but aroun 5k miles it exhuast finally opened up and broke in....it got a little louder, but thats pretty much with any muffler...they have break in periods too...jsut you don't have to take it easy on them

I have the exact same setup, but I really didn't notice a difference in sound or power(speaking of the mid-pipe). It is still to quite for my liking. I am now forced to buy a GHL catback exhaust.

Oh hell yeah it was easier...it fit perfectly and came with a new gasket. Now as for adding a 2 1/2" cat back later I will have to cut off the reducer. As far as increase in power mine comes on instantly and pulls all the way through the RPM range...awesome mod! http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

quote:

its got a bigger tip, hence more noise, but it is the same setup so no more power

I don't think it's just a different tip; it looks like a whole different muffler to me. As a matter of fact, it looks exactly like the muffler/tip on the 180hp (single-tip) Audi TT. I've never read anything to confirm this, but it makes sense from a parts-sharing standpoint.
To those of you with a 2.5" DP/TDI Mid/337 Muffler combo: I'd love to hear a sound clip. Also, can anyone confirm whether or not the TDI midpipe is stainless steel (I've read conflicting information).
