40th Anniversary GTI?

Has anyone heard anything about the 40th Anniversary GTI? According to what I've read, it was supposed to be released at the end of summer.

The vehicle itself probably won't be available to order until late this year (usually Oct/Nov) and most likely won't hit the dealerships until after that sometime. According to VWs press release from Jul 18th, details for the 40th will be released at a later date this year:

Having said that, they might release details a bit earlier, so maybe in September or so. Personally, I'm quite curious at what they'll be offering on this trim level if they're putting it between the base and mid trim.

I've heard that 2023 S,SE(Autobahn in CA), Autobahn(Performance in CA) will release as usual and the 40th anniversary will be a later availability, at least here in the US.
Wouldn't the 2016 GTI have been the 40th anniversary, since the mk1 GTI debuted in 1976? Unless your taking the start date of the "Golf" GTI, which is 1985. Then the 40th would be the 2025 model.

It's the 40th anniversary of the GTI being available in the US - 1983

This could be purely hopeful speculation on my part, but there is a local show to me happening this weekend, called the Lo’e Show in Pottstown, PA. The show is being put on my Jamie Orr from Orchid Euro who has pretty strong connections with VW. On Sunday at 12:30PM EST they are supposedly unveiling a limited edition VW. I am hoping that it’s the 40th GTI! Again, this is hopeful speculation on my part.

I do know that they are also making a big deal about R’s at the show, so I suppose it might be the 20th anniversary R, but VW already released the media release for that car, so I’m not 100% sure.

I am hoping to make it to the show. If I do I will post to this thread what they unveil!

Yes, '83. My first new car was a $6k '83 Rabbit L. Couldn't get the $9k GTi.

A former colleague had one. Ian Ziering's cousin.

That's exciting. I hope you're right.

Just came in here to post that. As soon as they lifted the veil I had to leave the show, but I wasn’t really interested in hearing anymore about the 20th since they already done the media release. Cool car, but nothing overly spectacular compared to the standard Golf R

Just my wishes, not suggesting that VW would actually offer this, but I'd love to see the 40th Anniversary simply come with the Clubsport front grill, rear valence and exhaust.

Yeah, saw the press release and couldn’t tell what made it a 20th 🤷🏻‍♂️

Yep. I was really hoping this would be like the 20th/25ths were and the edition 45 in Europe would be the predecessor to our 40th. That spec with some fun colors would have been awesome, but I think that's out the window based on them slotting this in between the S and SE. At this point we can only pray that it's offered in something other than white, silver, and red...

While I would absolutely love to see (and fingers are still crossed) some special colours, I can live with Reflex Silver, its on my short list anyway. Just waiting to see what options they're taking out of the Autobahn (SE) trim 🧐

Def could live with it. I just think colors are the only thing left that they can really do to differentiate from a standard model. When the 20ths and original Rs came out, they seemed like completely different cars since the base Golfs and GTIs looked pretty bland in those days with their 14" wheels and Jeep status suspensions. Now, even the most base model GTI is pretty great looking. Obviously they've taken some flak over the last few generations for special editions being nothing more than badges, so seems like color is a logical step in between.

I get that, love that the US Market had the Autobahn Launch Editions in PY, really makes them standout from the others. The rabbits a couple years ago got Cornflower Blue, great way to tell those from others. Fahrenheit Editions in the Orange ect. VW has been good in the past on special editions I hope the MK8 is no different.

Ah yes, the Mk5 Fahrenheit. There was one driving around in the town I used to live in, pretty much sure it was the only one I ever saw, but the Mk5 GTI wasn't the most popular generation to begin with.

I do hope that VW does keep that tradition going and offer something different, but until then, we anxiously await for an updated media release 😁

A little food for thought for my fellow Canadian's in regarding the 40th Anniversary, more to the point, if in fact, are we going to see the trim offered in Canada or not?

The reason being, the 40th Anniversary trim is to commemorate the arrival of the GTI to the US back in 1983 which was also the case in Canada, however, Canada did have a "GTI" back in 1979 and 1980 that the US did not have, but it was not a true GTI and just a slightly modified Rabbit in regards to the suspension but nothing to the engine or performance. So, does that 2 year period of a faux GTI count or not?

Discuss 🧐 😁
VW just changed their site (from what I can see) to say "40th Anniversary Edition joins the lineup mid-model year to celebrate the hot hatch’s history in the U.S. " so mid-model year, chances are its not being released until March-April the earliest I am guessing.

Do you have a link for that? I can't seem to find anything other than the original press releases. I'm just very curious if there is an update as to what options/features the 40th offers so any new potential info would be helpful.
