Re: 4k or 2y trans for 2.0 16v (eurodezign)

From what I hear, the 4K has additional internal bearings that the 2Y lacks. Otherwise, they're identical except for a minor final drive variation - 3.94 vs 3.89
In any case, get the 4K rebuilt with a bolt kit and add a .75 5th gear if you want to drive it on the street and retain your hearing/sanity.

I think you mean a 2H. 2Y is 16V tranny and is lightly stronger than 4K. Other difference is the diff, 4K has 3.94, 2Y has 3.67.

Ive had both, I have a 4k right now in my 2.0 16V but im going back...it all boils down to whether you prefer acceleration or top end speed. I sure miss my freeway power.

if I use the 4K tranny and put a .75 or .71 5th gear in... shouldnt that give me the short gears for around town then still have the long legs for freeway battles??

Yeah - I always get those confused. It's not like I don't have one of each right now - one in the car and one in the bed of my truck. The 3.67 final drive is nice for crusing but the 3.94 final drive really wakes up the 16v.
eurodezign hit the nail on the head - the 4K will provide the in-town acceleration to squirt in and out of those holes in traffic with a tall 5th gear will lower the rpms enough to make the car a good highway cruiser.

original .89 5th gear in my 4K, tops out at around 120-125 at near redline http://****************.com/smile/emthdown.gif

Hi! I was doing a little research and found your insights...I am building a 2.0 16V 9A, ported & polished, ABF cams on CIS Basic and will be driven daily with occassional track.
My question is, does the 4K tranny if mated to a 2.0 16v 9A pulls & gives really good around town?
If I swapped a taller 5th gear for freeway flying, will it change the acceleration of the 4K tranny?
I am doing this build because I want to have torque and power on all revving range just like the ABF.

I have a 4K with poor mans posi (pel-o-lok shim kit) and love it. motor was a bit over stock so I would have really liked a taller 5th. Yes it should pull hard around town. I just wanted a little more top end. had a sporty 2.0 swapped it for a tuned up G60, now I'm in the process of building the 2.0 16v for boost with a twin screw and although I have an 02A and 02J I have the clutch and shim kit for the 020 so thats going in for now... That shim kit makes a noticeable difference in power output cornering both cornering and pulling out.

I had the same decision to make with my current 16V truck resurrection.
Having a 4K and a 2Y on shelf (both with Quaife diffs and stock 5th gears)- I chose the 2Y this time around.
The fact that I’m also running 195/45-14s makes the effective gearing high enough already.
