5000 mile maintenence. Take my own oil, filter?

498 Views 3 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  DJKeebler
I was thinking on taking my own oil (Mobil 1) My question is how much oil for a 2002 GTI VR6. Which car shop has good prices? What filter should I get? Or should I just let them do their thing?
Thanks

Take it to a dealer. Sure take your own oil...thats what I would do. But for the oil filter...let them put an OEM one on...I dont know if its just me, but I feel saver with OEM parts on...I am leanient on the oil though...since they put in whatever oil the dealer gets anyways. That is my 2 cents. Take it or leave it.

I had to find this same info last week, when I went in for my 5000 mi service. Take your own oil. For your VR6, the info I found says 5.7 qts.
I let them use the OEM filter, but didn't feel really good about the Kendall oil they said they use by default -- I bought Valvoline Full-Synthetic.

Just so people are aware and since it hasn't been mentioned, DO NOT use any other oil filter in your VW's other than OEM! There is a special valve in the VW oil filters that others do not have. Someone tried to tell me that Fram or another manufacturer had this valve but I do not trust em. The engine is arguably the most important piece in your car so why not spend the few extra dollars and get the OEM one if it will help ensure your car lasts longer.
Also, I'm using Amsoil 10W-30 in my car and it has got to be one of the best oils I have ever used. I used to use Mobil 1 which was great but the Amsoil can go up to 20K miles between changes. I won't be going that long since I'm obsessive about changes at least every 5K miles.
