I am looking at a 1992 16v GTI that needs a water pump. Does $700 seems high to you guys? But this was the quote. Potterman has the pump for $50.00 and the the timing parts for a total of $55.00.
I am not that familiar with the A2, so any advice from the pro's would be appreciated.
Re: $700 for a water pump, and timing chain!?!?!?!? (AceOvSpadez)
A reputable VW shop should be able to do a timing belt for no more than $200 labor the belt is about $25 as is the tensioner. $700 seems awful high to me for relatively simple procedures. My best advice would be invest some money in a Bently manual and time in learning how to do these types of things on your own. You will save yourself alot of $$$ in the future. Shops run about $70 an hour so it can add up fast.

Is this a quote from the dealer???
At the shop I bring it to, I paid $280 for a new timing belt, basically all the cam seals and gaskets and a new distributor cap. When I had my water pump replaced on my other GLI it was only about $130.
