$700 to fix my sunroof!?!

894 Views 26 Replies 24 Participants Last post by  Guvs97JettaGT
So my sunroof is broken, if you can't tell by the topic.
Anyway, the guy at the stealership where I'm getting some work done said that one of the cables was broken and that it's not covered in my warranty and quoted me about $700 to fix it. I'm curious if that's a reasonable price? And if so, is there any way that I could make it any cheaper (i.e., do it myself, buy used parts, etc, etc)? I searched the forums to see if anyone else had asked, since VW sunroofs apparently suck, but I couldn't find any. So... Anyway, thanks in, advance guys!

Well the motor alone is $550! Maybe a lot of the $700 is labor?

my sunroof is broken too. i was told to take out the ceiling interior and then get it looked at. but first get a bentley manual otherwise you might damage the interior
Re: $700 to fix my sunroof!?! (FALC0N)

i got a 93 jetta, mine broke bout a year ago. one clip thing broke, and only one side of the sunroof came down.
this is what i did. I walked around to auto bays at my local VW shop, and talked to a tech directly. GAve him $150 bux, and a case of beer. he took the whole thing apart, straitened out the framework, and gave me new hardware!!
good as new!!
good luck

I heard also that the majority of the job fixing these is in the labour.
Ive been told by one shop that they wouldnt even do it because of the labour time.
I think me and Ryan (FALCON) can fix his w/ a case of beer and a whole weekend

I was quoted the same for my Jetta. For $700, I'll open and close it manually, thank you very much!
Re: $700 to fix my sunroof!?! (Doug Brekke)

Sunroof from Wrecking Yard $250-$350 for the whole thing minus Motor depending on yard, Motor $50-$150 maybe from a Vortexer that is parting one out, or $150-$300 at the wrecking yard.
But if you think about it, the cables aren't a big deal, just find out the part numbers from the dealer's computer and order the cables (actually look more like belts) then get a bentley and a case of beer for yourself and get to work.
I have to get a new Motor and Full sunroof assembly this summer, mind is COMPLETELY FUBARED.
But ohh well.

I'm in the broken sunroof wayz car club too. Mine crapped out over a month ago, and now it slightly leaks. Of course I live in washington..... Anyhoo, I was quoted $361 out the door to fix my roof. The driver side cable broke, it's common for the cables to break, so I have to get all new cables, guides, and it's around $150 in labor. Uh, when I went to the stealership and told them of my problem, they didn't even look at my car and the guy behind the desk was like "that'll be $600 at least" so obviously I made my appointment at the dealership......... NOT!
Re: $700 to fix my sunroof!?! (germanrox)

should be a damn recall on it.. someone needs to get their arm stuck in it when the cable breaks or their neck.. then maybe they will recall it!!! Someone get on that soon please.. thx hehe

My sunroof was acting up after a drive on the freeway the plastic frame came all loose and rattling like crazy and plus it leaked when it rained, but when the trusty Bently manual arrived in the mail I went to work and fixed the problem.just had to reclip the frame.

maybe VW shouldn't make cars with moving windows...all windows should be stationary...they have lots of prob's designing power stuff.

Mine was broken two years ago. I tried to open in when it was frozen shut and one of the cables and a guide broke. Go to the dealership and get a cable kit for it. They aren't cheap, like $150 Canadian. Then do the rest yourself. It's not a difficult job at all. It doesn't require any special tools, just patience, and a clear mind.
The only tricky parts are getting everything back in the way you took it out! Draw a little picture, or number the parts as you remove them, and make sure they go back in the same way. All you have to do is:
- remove the glass
- drop the head liner down
- take the motor off
- take the sunroof frame, etc out
- do your repair
- put it all back!
I didn't have a bentley manual or anything, just figured things out as I went. I also got a photocopy of the micro-fiche schematic that the dealer ship uses to find part numbers from the dealer ship and consulted that when I was putting it all back together..

It's not a bad job at all, it just takes a few hours, maybe an afternoon or something.
Give it a try at least, it sure beats like $800!!!

And if you get half way through and can't finish, then take it to the dealer and have them fix it.. It's not like your trying to do a car imobolizing repair!

You got THAT right !!!
I had a '90 Jetta, manual everything - everything worked OK. Now, with an MKIII VR6, power everything, everuthing started goimg to hell...
Sunroof - on small clip broken, windows regulators stared going one after another (good thing i can do these myself, the stealership quoted me OVER THE PHONE for windows regulators "at leat $450 , while for the sunroof "about $1500) They woughta be locked up !

Yeah, my sunroof is done as well. The motor doesn't want to work. My friends dad thinks he found the problem however. So putting the motor back in the car will be on my to-do list once spring arrives.
Btw, best investment you can make is a Bentley Manual. Why pay someone when you can do it yourself?
