Re: 82 Rabbit (GTXMAN)

I can do Ford rear brakes with little difficulty.
I took the drums of my Rabbit, took a good look and then dropped the car off at my mechanic. Easiest brake job I didn't do.
Happy wrenching,
fat biker

Nope Golf 1,Jetta 1 forum.Hey GFC,you aren't the one who drives "BLACK BEAUTY" are you?I saw a Rabbit in Scarboro, premium looking, black exterior, tinted windows.Got only a 5 sec glimpse of it but named it "BLACK BEAUTY".Was going to have my 82 painted black.Quess I'll have to go with silver metallic.HI,OH SILVER!!!!!!!!!!!!AWAY!!!!!!!!!!!Contacted John Gagon in Harpswell. He does complete restores and retrofits.Ground up.Am going to pull 1.7 and have 2.0 ABA as the forum suggested.I,m GTXMAN because I once owned a 70 Plymouth Roadrunner---440 engine,375 HP,4 speed pistol grip with air grabber hood.I am looking for a 70 GTX----BUT a #1 rated runs around 30,000 dollars.I quess if I sink 5,000 into Rabbit I,ll save a lot and still have what looks like a "sleeper".Go Portland Pirates and Boston Bruins.

Re: 82 Rabbit (GTXMAN)

You should have rear "auto" adjusters on your Rabbit, and the replacement of rear brake drums is a fairly easy job. Just do one side at a time so you have the other side as a reference as where the different springs are located. You only need the basic hand tools, such as a large pair of pliers or vice clamp plier, smaller pair of pliers, and maybe a screwdriver. After replacing the shoes, get them fairly centered so the drum can be reinstalled.
The "auto" adjuster is a wedge, and you will see it when you remove the drum. It is a little PITA with the adjuster but not a big problem. Good Braking, WWR.
