just need someone to verify what could be causing the play in my steering column. I look under there and the bearing fell out and the piece right below the bearing, which i suppose was holding it in, went bad. so is this the piece that needs to be replaced, thrust ring part no. 171-419-539?

Re: '88 16v: play in the steering column (pearl16v)

While what you've experienced is fairly rare in Sloroccos, it's unfortunately common in virbra-massage cars like the diesels. While you can go thru the headache of pulling the steering column and replacing the thrust ring, alot of the dieselheads just push the bearing back in place and snug it down with a hose-clamp on the steering column. Yes, it sounds hokey but if it works for the diesels that vibrate 10X worse than any polyurethane motor mount setup, it should work fine in a Slorocco.
