89 CIS problems

683 Views 5 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  89cabrio
I am the new owner of a 89 Cabriolet with the 1.8 8v engine. This car sat for 6 months after quitting on the pervious owner. I can get the engine to start and surge to 1K and die. By flouring the excelerator I can get the engine to start and run above 2K but it will not idle. So far spark is good, Iv'e cleaned the injectors, previous owner replaced fuel pump, fuel filter, plugs, and wires all to no avail. I have replaced the fuel pump relay and have gotten it to this condition. I also have put fuel injector cleaner in the old gas and some new gas in the tank. To date I have put 10 miles on the car attempting to burn out / Clean out the fuel system. I'm just about out of ideas
Anyone else got something?

No that would be to easy
. checked all flex connections and all hard tubes nothing stands out. Great vacuume leak after backfiring and blowing out 3 of 4 injectors though

HMM. Blowing out injectors on a backfire sounds mighty impressive. Check Cam and ignition timming / wire routing. Since this happened all of a sudden to the priar owner, check to see if the timming belt sliped some teeth.

All the other running ranges seem to be there. by jazzing the throttle I can run the car up and down my block. seems to pull well under acceleration from 1k and up but push in the clutch and your done. The added flywheel effect of having the car weight makes the car drivable but not roadable. Still I will pull the timing belt cover and check for timing mark alignment.
