I had the self destructing diff problem and changed gearboxes.
The replacement is out of a scirocco (I think).
Now I have no speedometer (odo didn't work before - still doesn't).
I used the cable that was in the car - not the one from the donor (it was cut anyway).
Is it just ot seated properly or do I need to change cables?

That might be your problem. You should be using the same color speedometer gear as the one that was in the swap transmission. Compare the colors and swap in the donor cable gear if it is not the same color.
As far as your odometer, that might be a cracked or broken gear, a very common problem. I think there is some info on Timbo's Techsite on ways to fix that.

Ooops - I think I tossed the other gear.
I think one was white and the other orange.
I'll check it this weekend.

The gear will still mate to the output shaft in the trans, no matter the color, it just changes the accuracy of the speedo....your problem is the cable not being seated correctly it sounds like, as nothing is being spun. The odo problem is probably as described above with the little gear in the cluster itself, but the speedo is is because of the gear in the trans not being seated. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

No problem. Last I heard you can still get them as a part.
