I have an 89 jetta w/1.8l dig. ~133k miles. After about an hour of straight highway driving (70 - 75 mph) the car acts like it is running out of gas. The last two times it happened a few miles before I was getting off the interstate. After I got off the interstate there was no hesitation. I don't notice this problem during everyday use, just after long periods of highway driving. Currently the car hasn't died on me and I'm trying to fix the problem before it lets me stranded. The problem occurs with or without the cruise control on. TIA

Re: 89 jetta cutting out -- any idea? (r67_vette)

It could be either of your fuel pumps or your fuel filter http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

My 89 GLI had the exact same problems you described. I finally replaced the fuel filter and it has been fine for 2000 miles since (fingers crossed)
