89 vs 92 octane?

Does it make sense that I get more power with 92, but better fuel economy with 89 on a stock 2001 VR6?
My car recommends premium, but I don't get pinging with either octane rating. Actually I ran a couple tanks with 87 just to test, and that was fine too. Can't decide whats more important: saving money, or the feel of that extra bit of power

its actually better fuel economy if you used the highest octane.

So you think that's so? Any facts?

That is what I read, and was told by a VW technician.
Check this out too for more advantages of using high octane gasoline http://www.sunoco.ca/content.asp?id=11

dsr did dyno's of both and reported an amazing difference is whp. mpg is also widely known to be better with more octane and the motor runs cooler because of it.

Best be using that 92 chevron in the Ctown area for sure....fawk all that other junk. If we had that sunco i'd say use it but we don't. The extra 15 cents a gallon is cheaper than your detonated engine.......Camble Nelson VW in Edmonds stressed 92 highly.....

I wish the Comp 100 would come down from $5/gal in Mukilteo.......
Yeah you're right, I get about 1.5 more miles per gallon with 92, but 89 is still better in miles per dollar

I like the 92 though, so I think I'll stick with it. Thanks for the comments.
