Is there any difference in the block between the standard 1.8l 8v and the GTI/GLI 1.8l 8v? Or is the only difference in the cam and valve sizes?
Looking at my bone stock Fox Wagon, and it's EXTREMELY low hp rating, would it be better to swap the ENTIRE motor with a gli/gti 1.8l or should one just swap the heads to gain the different cam and larger intake/exhaust valves?
My 88 Fox wagon is a 8v 1.8l CIS-E
My 86 Jetta GLI has the 8v 1.8l CIS-E
yet the GLI boasts like 40-50 more hp stock. Is it just in the head? Or are the pistons also involved?

Re: 8v Heads (A1Rocco)

That's a good question, I don't know. I just assumed they were hydrualic heads since the first ones sold in North America were the 1987 model year. If they were solid lifter head, wouldn't they be the only 1.8L small valve solid lifter heads made by VW. Maybe they did things a little different in Brazil where the Foxes were made.

Re: 8v Heads (ABA Scirocco)

Well, reguardless, my question has been answered.
I am going to hold on to my 86 Jetta GLI so that I can swap the entire motor over, not just the head.
Now what's this I hear about the A2 CIS-E having a knock sensor, where the BX CIS-E doesn't? Any ideas on how to make the Knock sensor make the move to the BX?

Re: 8v Heads (Vee Dubb)

I imagine it wouldn't be any different than putting it on in a CIS engine, which is what I've done. You need the throttle body switches, the wiring harness, the knock sensor and control box. There's a wiring diagram for a KS system on a CIS engine at www.volkswagen.org just follow the diagram, installation is fairly straight forward.
