Re: 8v information sites? (negativl)

Well, I will be honest: I don't really know some basic things about VW's. Before I made the right choice, I was planning on getting a Dodge turbo car of some sort .
yeah, I know what you're thinking, but the thing was is that I found a site about the car I wanted, and it had oodles of information on Dodge turbo's. But I liked VW's a lot better, bought one, but I don't have some basic knowledge and understanding of the car I have.
So, that's my story and I'd like some links to just general 1985 8v/GTi/Golf/VW sites, anything relating to my car, really. I havent been able to find much. Thanks!

To be equally honest, I didn't know anything directly about VWs before 4 months ago, when I got my gti. I haven't really needed more info that you can find searching/reading/posting here, and the Bentley. The rest is basic mechanical stuff. The 8v engines, particularly our CIS-E early ones, are really simple and straightforward.
Once you take the engine out, replace the timing belt, clutch/flywheel and tranny, etc... the whole car just kinda makes sense.

Ok. But yesterday, some guy told me I have a CIS fuel system and not the CIS-E. I didn't know for sure which mine was. Actually, I really don't know the differance between any of them:CIS, CIS-E, CIS Motronic? I could use some help

Thanks, Man!

CIS uses a steel fuel distributor (the thing on top of the airbox with the braided fuel injector lines coming out of it) that's painted black. CIS-E uses an aluminum distributor. There's actually differences in them, since CIS-E has more control of the fuel dist than CIS, so it's a good indicator. CIS-E Motronic comes with 16v engines, so it's pretty easy to ID.
I think I figured that out in the Bentley somewhere (probably the FUEL section has some notes that make it kinda clear.
So okay, if you haven't found a Bentley manual yet, definitely go for it. As has been said by lots of folks here, it's the bible. http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif

Oh yeah, and assuming it's the original engine, you have an HT engine which is definitely CIS-E.

I've been told my engine code is HT. So, that wrks for me!
I have a Haynes manual, which I found out, doesnt really help you find info on your car. It's just there to show you how to fix it. I wish I had a Bentley, by what I've heard. Thanks though!

Oh yeah, I have both actually, and I do use the Haynes for some stuff -- it's good for ideas on how to do stuff without the VW tools, and the pictures are good when they're for our model. Definitely get yourself a Bentley though. Amazon may be evil, but they have em for 35 bucks:

Or you can hunt em up at other places: ISBN 0-8376-0342-0

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, Matt but I do not think that you have an '85 GTI.

Here are my reasons : Headlights; you have the small squares that came on the '85 to '86 Golfs. Bumpers; yours should have red stripes on them instead you have the chrome strips, Side moulding and fender flares; you have the narrow side moulding you should have wider ones with a red stripe on them and a GTI badge set into the moulding, you should also have the fender flares but instead you just have the chip/rock guard on the rear fenders, Side window mouldings; you have a chrome surround on the front side and rear side windows, you should just have the black rubber for the rears and blacked out trim around the door windows, also a chrome inset in the door handles should be black, Rear window surround ; there should be black vinyl around the rear window that extends to the edge of the body. Seats ; should be the sports seats with larger side bolsters, the middle part should be gray/dk gray stripes, your look like the basic Golf seats, the steering wheel is different too.
I cannot tell by the engine pic , but you should also have an ISV ( idle stabilizer valve) sitting on a bracket on the valve cover, you should see a knock sensor attached to the front of the block ( a green wire/hose attached to a bolt) also you should see a water to oil intercooler where the oil filter screws into.
Granted ,the car is old now and a couple of things could have been changed but probably not all of them seeing how you have a stock looking car ( looks like even the original steel wheels). I bought my '85 GTI in '88 and it was Bone stock, so trust me I know what one looks like. Sorry,
